The Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter - This neutral density filter gives you the capability to use fast film in bright sunlight. ND filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

When used with a digital camera, you can effectively see how this filter works. After the initial exposure, you can check your LCD image and then make whatever change in exposure you feel you need to enhance your image. By rotating the ring, you can either increase or decrease the ND effect. This will be especially useful when trying to achieve "blurred" or "panned" shots.

The filter contains "index" points to help you mark your spot. They do not represent actual ND settings , i.e. non-calibrated - but are there to help you re-set your filter when you wish to recreate the effect.

Singh-Ray Thin Vari-ND Overview

The Singh-Ray 77mm (Thin Mount) Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter - This neutral density filter gives you the capability to use fast film in bright sunlight. ND filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

When used with a digital camera, you can effectively see how this filter works. After the initial exposure, you can check your LCD image and then make whatever change in exposure you feel you need to enhance your image. By rotating the ring, you can either increase or decrease the ND effect. This will be especially useful when trying to achieve "blurred" or "panned" shots.

Note:
Singh-Ray cannot predict when vignetting may occur - especially with very wide angle lenses. To avoid vignetting, adjust your focal length, position, and/or composition to remove the vignetting - use your digital camera's display for reference.
Front ring can accept a Mor-Slo 5-stop Solid ND Filter or a Cokin holder for ND Grad Filters
Note:
To stack Mor-Slo with Vari-ND, at least one filter has to be standard mount with front threads - two thin-mount filters will not stack
Front Min/Max density ring lets you adjust density from 2-2/3 to 8 f/stops
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

On my Sony a7RII with the 24-105 f4 lens, there is uncorrectable vignetting at 24mm and any densities at or above a 75% setting will result in color casts that can be very difficult to correct. Similar problems with my Sony a7RII with a 16-35mm f4 lens using a 72 to 77 step up ring.

I had tried other variable ND filters but had noticed slight color shifts. This one doesn't have that problem. Works as advertised.

I purchased this for use with canon L lenses but I was not happy with the amount of vingheting it creates also at extreme settings it introduces polarizing shadows. I am exchanging it for A 10 stop mor slow filter

great filter, sure its expensive, but it's so much easier to use then constantly sliding in and out filters into a filter tray, not to mention cheaper as well. only issue i have is slight vignetting when using my canon wide angle zoom, but i can just zoom slightly and it will go away

I use this variable (thin) filter for both stills and video. Provides wide latitude for control and creativity, particularly under a full bright sun. Slight vignetting on my 16mm fully wide, but backing off 5% resolves problem. Quality build provides for smooth ring action. A bit pricy, but worth it, considering the number of fixed filter sets it replaces.

Don't expect it to do what it was not designed to do. Expect some vignetting if you use a very wide angle lens. They tell you this so don't be disappointed when it does.

The rear ring of the Singh-Ray Vari-ND filter mounts to your lens while the front element is spun in order to adjust the density. No, this filter does not have polarizing properties and will not act as a circular polarizer.

Can you use the Nikon hood when this filter is attached to a 24-120 zoom or 24mm prime?

I recently used this filter with my 28-300 Nikon zoom and did also use the Nikon hood with no problems. I have not tried the filter on any of my prime lenses so I cannot speak to that. This is an excellent neutral density filter and I am very pleased with the results.
