Bower 500mm f/8.0 overview

  • 1Description

The Bower 500mm f/8.0 Manual Focus Lens is a catadioptric mirror T-mount lens, precision manufactured in South Korea.

When combined with the T-mount to fit your camera system, this mirror lens mounts to camera and works on both "full frame" cameras as well as the "APS-C" style digital SLR cameras.  T-Mounts are available for all the digital SLR systems, as well as for C-mount systems.  However, in every case the fixed f/8 aperture is not communicated to the camera body.  As such, you can use the lens in "M" manual exposure mode or "A" aperture-priority mode only.

Despite this lens' long 500mm focal length, it has a compact 3 x 3.5" size and weighs under 1 pound, making it a bit easier to handle than normal 500mm refractor lenses (it should be used with a tripod or monopod in any case).  It also has a much different rendering of out of focus areas than a normal lens; highlights will be doughnut-shaped rings with more saturation and contrast on the edge of the ring than on the center.

This lens is an ideal candidate for astrophotography use when mounted to a Vixen GP2 Photo Guider (or other motorized equatorial telescope mount).

    Bower 500mm f/8.0 reviews

500mm f/8.0 Manual Focus Telephoto T-Mount Lens is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from good value for money and light weight I just tested this new baby out, it's super light for a tele lens. I've already get info from internet about pro-cons of mirror lens and they are true, so it doesn't surprise me about the slightly less contras, doughnut bokeh - which is for me is a plus/uniqueness. it's manual, fix mm, fix F, cheap, T-mount needed. it's a good value for money

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad lens I bought one of these Bower 500mm f/8.0 lenses and I wish that I had saved my money for a better lens. This lens is a mass produced piece of junk that does not let in enough light to allow you to take decent quality photos and using a 2.0 X teleconverter with it only lessens the amount of light rendering it a totally useless lens. My advise to anyone considering buying one of these Bower 500mm f/8.0 lenses is,.. DON'T,.. you would be much better of buying a $149.00 Canon AF 75-300mm lens as it takes much better quality photos and is auto focus, don't be fooled by the 500mm size of the Bower, what good is size if the photo quality is horrable? Save your money for a decent lens and stay away from JUNK like this !

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointing On recieving my Bower 500mm f8 mirror lens I did a quck comparison with my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and the mirror lens came a poor second best. The day was overcast and the lighting flat. The Bower showed a distinct vignetting and the image was really lacking in contrast. The image from the Sigma set at 200mm zoom and then cropped to the same image size was sharper, more vibrant and generally better. The build quality of the Bower is poor and I had to tighten the grub screws on the T-mount. I would not recommend this lens.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fun, good build, but poor image The lens is fun to play with. The build quality is good. However, the images produced with this lens are very low contrast with washed out colors, and vignette is too pronounced for my taste. The lens is also simply not sharp at any distance. The resolution, color, and contrast is poorer than a 1980's 70-210mm zoom with a 2x extender. I thought I could make some use of this lens despite its shortcomings but that was not the case. I returned the lens (without a problem).
