Nikon D5000 Overview

  • 1Description

The Nikon D5000 digital SLR incorporates numerous pro-quality imaging technologies normally found in pricier Nikon DSLRs in a smaller, less-expensive Nikon DX-format camera body. Key among these features are the same 12.9 megapixel CMOS sensor found in the Nikon D90, High-Definition video capture (with sound), a 2.7" variable-angle LCD, Live View for composing stills or video from most any point-of-view, an 11-point autofocus system with Focus Tracking, and 3D Color Matrix II metering.

Other advanced Nikon features found in the D5000 include the ability to shoot in RAW, 3 levels of JPEG compression, or RAW+JPEG image capture, burst-rates up to 4 fps, an EXPEED image processor, and a 3-tier dust-removal system.

AVI-format video clips can be captured at 3 levels of compression in lengths up to 20 minutes with the ability to apply exposure compensation when shooting in Program, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority, and Manual modes.

Depending on your needs, exposure information along with a grid screen for image composition can be displayed on the camera's multi-position LCD when shooting in Live View mode.

The Nikon D5000 is optimized for use with all AF-S and AF-I NIKKOR lenses and works with select functionality when used with Nikon Type G, D, AI-P, and non-CPU-series optics.

Included in this kit is the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Lens, which is an ultra compact, lightweight standard zoom lens that has a 3x focal zoom range and is ideally suited for use with compact Nikon digital SLR cameras that feature the smaller DX sized chip. This lens offers the most basic zoom range in the DX lens series, an equivalent focal length in 35mm terms of 27-82.5mm. It will conveniently cover everything from tight indoor portraits to standard snap shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't judge a book by its cover! I was leary of buying a refurbished product, however was pleasantly surprised at what I recieved! Camera in new condition. Awesome camera! Easy to use even for someone who is just learning! Love my D5000!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent camera body for a great lens I use D5000 for portraits, scenery, occasional close-ups and movies. The presets are numerous enough and detailed enough to do a good job with all these. The scene mode in particular has many options to achieve the most accurate lighting conditions of what you shoot. The camera itself is comfortable to handle and not too heavy. The display is fairly adequate, but is not a good place to test your colors; also, it is hard to see what's on it in many lighting conditions, so the viewfinder is often the preferred choice to compose a shot. The battery, even new, will need to be recharged often, so going abroad or even on a long trip requires some planning - an extra battery, power converters etc. The kit lens for D5000 does not make justice to the camera - I have now switched to Tamron...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It is as good as the D90 I am using a D90 and wanted a backup that is cheaper and lighter. The operation of the D5000 was quite similar to D90. However it has a adjustable LCD screen that prove to be very useful for taking shots from various heights and angles as against the fixed LCD of the D90.However the screen was not as clear as the D90. (Lower pixel count). Cause of its smaller size and weight, I carry it with me very frequently and able to do my street photography for longer hours. The downside was the LCD screen came from Nikon with multiple small scratches although it was a refurblished set. But B&H reimbused me for getting a replacement in Singapore, saving unnessary shipping costs. Reliable B&H!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First digital SLR doesn't disappoint After gradually working my way up to ever more expensive digital point and shoot cameras, I still just wasn't happy with the colors and low-light performance. I really grew to appreciate what a good lens and a large sensor could do after using an old, first-generation, pro-sumer Nikon at work. The refurbished Nikon D5000 I bought from B&H has been great. It was indeed factory reconditioned by Nikon, not just some secondary shop. Looked brand new. The camera itself allows a huge number of options over my Canon S90, but it's still easy to find your way around. It's an ideal camera for someone who wants some pro options, but is still learning. Picture quality has been phenomenal versus my higher end Lumix and Canon point and shoots. So much closer to what the real eye sees. Picture in dark corners turn out, without that ugly graniness I've gotten used to. I bought a used DSLR off before this, and it turned out to have some hidden broken features. Save yourself some headache and get the refurbished one, with warranty. I've worked in consumer electronics for decades, and I can vouch for B&H's claim that refurbished units can sometimes be even better than the typical unit rolling off the production line. The repaired/retouched units always get more attention/time than the normal units. Some complain about the movie mode not auto focusing during capture. If you want a device tailored to video capture, buy that. If you want something tailored to high quality stills, get this. It would be nice to have everything in one for such a low price, but in the real world, there are trade-offs.
