AquaTech 1381 Overview

The AquaTech Medium Soft Hood, being lightweight and collapsible and very difficult to damage, is a practical alternative to the originally-supplied metal or carbon fiber hoods that you find with the enormous telephoto lenses for DSLR cameras.

This particular model fits lenses from 200mm f/2 through 500mm f/4. It comes with a pair of compression straps to perfectly affix the Soft Hood to the outer diameter of your lens barrel no matter the maker. The Soft Hood is lighter than the hoods originally supplied with most lenses, and is made from waterproof, abrasion-resistant nylon.

Solid and practical

I bought an old beat up Nikon 500/4P that was missing a hood, and this was a perfect solution. It unfolds flat for easy packing, and is easy to attach/detach from the lens. It is quite a bit heavier and more solid than I expected, but neither is it too heavy. I do stand the lens on this hood sometimes, but I'm careful to make sure the ground is level and the consequence of tumbling over are not too severe. I think this hood provides excellent protection for the front of the lens, it seems like somebody could swing a baseball bat into the front while attached and the lens would be untouched.

A good hood... only.

Needed a quick hood solution for my 400mm after my factory CF hood decided to go rappelling down a cliff while at Pikes Peak Hill Climb this year >_<. I love Aquatech products in the water, and was happy to see they offer a cost effective solution. I love that it works great as a hood. Deployment is quick, simple, and integrates well with the lens. I dislike the feel when I'm grabbing the hood for stability; those of you with big glass know what I'm talking about. That rigid feel of laying your hand atop the hood just isn't there. Other than that, its a great product that does its primary function well. I'm assuming one could get used to it not being a rigid hood, but for me... I can't.

I adapted this to fit my Nikon 300mm f/4 and it works GREAT! I use the lens to shoot surf professionally, mostly on the east coast. The lens hood built into the lens is barely adequate;add a 1.4 converter and forget about it! This hood was easy to re-fit and easily handles the early morning glare off the water and builds in great contrast to the images as well!

This is to go on a 500mm f4 lens. It is a flat flexible cover that rolls around the end of the lens, and is held together by velcro and clasps. It does seem to be a lot of $$ for what it is, but there is really no other alternative since Nikon in their infinite wisdom does not make a replacement lens hood for the 500mm f4.

Seems to be a great concept and maybe I just got a bad one. I ordered the medium for a 500 f4, but, when in place, the velcro hardly touched so there is not a great or tight fit. The plastic buckles are adjustable so I was able to get it to fit but there is no way I would stand such an expensive lens on this hood. Great concept though. Guess I could have tried the large but simply returned it.

I have only tried it out once, but it's saves space in the camera bag. I think the design is really smart. I like the way those Aussies think.

The hood for both my 300 2.8 and 200 1.8 were both damaged from use and could not be repaired. This hood is a great alternative. Easy to travel with and very efficient. The body and lens will stand straight up without a monopod attached to the lens.

These soft hoods are not suitable for zoom lenses where the lens barrel extends as they fix to the lens barrel and not the front of the lens like traditional lens hoods. You could incur vignette issues when using these hoods with extending zoom lenses.
