Norman ML600R overview

  • 1Description

This is a Norman 2 Monolight Travel Kit w/ Built-in PocketWizard Receivers (120VAC) Kit. Norman monolights feature 5-stop adjustable power in 1/10 f/stop increments. Flash durations are short -- 1/1200 second for either the 600, or 400Ws models. 600 Ws models come equipped with 250 watt modeling lights, the 400Ws models have 250 watt modeling lights.

The Norman ML series allows independent adjustment of modeling light levels. Each reflector is highly polished, with a properly-placed hole for an umbrella shaft. This hole allows correct center placement of the light beam, when an umbrella is used.

Built-in Radio Slave
Each monolight has a built-in Pocket Wizard Radio Slave, which enables closed-system wireless firing from any Pocket Wizard Transmitter or Transceiver (available separately)
Each Monolight accepts over 100 Norman accessories and light modifiers including softboxes, reflectors, grids, snoots and barn doors (with R9113 Adapter Rings)

    Norman ML600R reviews

    2 Monolight Travel Kit w/ Built-in PocketWizard Receivers (120VAC) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy, quick, sturdy. For the last 3 years I have been doing manufacturing photography for a large metal engineering company. The reason that is important is because the area I am working in is generally very crowded, lighting is very dim and the sheer size of the our shop is huge. Approximately 1,000,000 square feet, so it is extremely important that I equipment that is portable. This unit does the job well. The case has little rolly wheels and plastic runners on the bottom so you can actually slide the case on it's back up/down a flight of stairs. The insider compartments are adjustable. 3 columns, with velcro inserts to create any size compartment within each column. There is also a large zip pocket that lines the entire front of the case. Very handy for speedrings, light meters, cords, etc... The stands are a bit tight at first, but they have loosened up a bit to make adjusting them much smoother. The handle on the monolight for adusting the angle of the unit is a bit difficult to work by design. The controls on the monolight are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. The built-in PocketWizard is definitely not user friendly though. I found the flash would trigger at random times when trying to wirelessly trigger flash, or it wouldn't trigger at all. It was very inconsistent. Granted, PocketWizards aren't really my favorite thing to mess with anyways, but I was expecting a better connection between hot shoe mount and monolight. I was wanting to cut out just one more wire by not having to do AC trigger, but I just bought a longer cord so the issue is moot now :) This is quite the powerful monolight though. I really wasn't expecting such bright light since I had never used a monolight before. I have had it for about 6 months now and I love it. Would have given it 5 stars had the PocketWizard not been so finicky.
