Impact VSLCD400 overview

  • 1Description

You might be surprised at how many photo assignments you can handle with a compact, lightweight monolight like the Impact Digital Monolight 400W/s (120VAC). It's got 400w/s of power in an easily transportable package, and light output that can be varied in 1/10 stop stages over a 4-stop range, accessible through the digital readout.  The 150W modeling light can be coupled to the flash, getting brighter or dimmer to match the actual light output, or independently set to the level you want. The monolight accepts S-type monolight reflectors and head accessories. It also has a limited Auto Dump function, firing the strobe when you reset to a different power level (so the strobe is automatically set to the correct setting for the next flash). A built-in optical slave allows the monolight to be triggered using another flash. Perfect for portraits, small still-lifes, and much more.

Power is variable over a 4-stop range
Digital readout coupled with the power variator

    Impact VSLCD400 reviews

    Digital Monolight 400W/s (120VAC) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good to star with. So far I have used this just a few times in a small studio setting. So far it performs as advertised and seems to be durable and dependable. That being said it has it's drawbacks. For example even on low power settings once the flash fires the whole unit, modeling light and all goes dim for a second or two. That also leads to the slow recycle time. When I saw 2 seconds I didn't think it would be to bad, but during that two seconds the modeling light is down as well. So you get a blinding burst of light then total darkness if you have a well closed off set. I have laughed it off for the most part because the shots have turned out great, you just need to be patient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't judge a book by it's cover This Mono light is very impressive! I recently conducted a test out doors to see how this perform and I must say it did rather well. For the set up, we used this monolight with a 26 x 26 inch soft box on a 10 foot light stand (This light is heavy, sandbags are a must). Paul Buff's Mini Lithium was my power source and Impact's power Sync were used to trigger the monolight. I had our model at about 8 feet from the light source and took 5 photos. After reviewing the shots, I didn't notice any inconsistency from the first to the last shot. Next I fired a series of 10 photos as soon as I heard the Monolight beep and once again, this mono light fired consistently from the first to the last photo and the images were pretty much the same. After my test I asked my model friend to change and we conducted a 2 hour photo shoot with this mono light. I'm very impress this this monolight and the quality of light it produces. More testing to come but so far, I love it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great for the first year...but that's it! I purchased three of the Impact 400w Digital Monolights about a year ago after doing a lot of research. I only shoot a few times a month, so I thought these would be perfect. I was happy with my purchase at first, but then the problems started. One of monolights stopped triggering the other two light when I used theImpactPowerTrigger 16 Channel AC Transmitter and Receiver Set that came with the lighting kit I purchased. So, I simply marked that light with a NO so I wouldn't use it to fire the other two lights. Last month, however, one of the other lights started overheating after about 45 minutes into a shoot. When this happens, the LCD display goes blank and it stops firing. Now, two days ago, the bolt that locks the tilt on the third light no longer tightens (stripped?). I could understand if ONE of these three issues occurred over time if I were a full-time photographer. I'm not a full-time photographer, and ALL of these issues have occurred. I realize that these are budget lights, but I would have expected them to last a lot longer, especially since I don't use them very often.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product at a great price After reading reviews on this site about the 400w Impact kit with 2 softboxes, I felt very comfortable ordering even though I had really not heard much about this manufacturer before. I couldn't be happier right now. I have about 2000 cycles on them in just the first week and they are performing perfectly. Lighting is very controllable and even, recycle time is fast, and the build quality is outstanding for the price. I would highly suggest this to anyone looking to build their first studio or even putting together a portable kit for on-site shoots since the kit has a bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful I love my Impact lights! Affordable price and they can get the job done. I'm not a big fan of the controls; The digital controls are much slower than cranking a dial, and all of the settings other than power aren't remembered when you turn the lights off. Recycle time is fair. Still a little slow, but faster than anything you'd get at this power and price-point. All in all, I love these lights. A few grievances, but they can get the job done and that's all that matters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Affordable Product This is an easy to use light that has a great output. I took it out of the box and was ready to use it right away. Great for new photographers still learning. It is a very affordable product. Just make sure you secure the light down while on the stand so it doesn't tip over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nice strobe looks durable. The recycle time is 1-2 seconds. I had this at 5.5 strenght or probably 3/4 of max power and was able to get f8.0 with the camera and strobe 10 ft away from the subject. I was shooting with a 43 inch reflective umbrella. ISO was at 200 and shutter at 1/125 sec. Not as heavy as I though. LED controls in the back are a plus. Has a built in fan that you can hear. Good afforable and puts out plenty of light. I am trying to shoot a family portrait with this has my only light source.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stuff. These are my first strobes and its been so easy to work with it on my Canon 5D. I've been using it primarily for portraits. The set up that it comes with it perfect - the light box, the carrying case etc.
