The Shining Technology FW-ESDP-DS9 is a FireWire ESD surge protector designed to go between a device using IEEE-1394 and computer. FireWire products, such as video cameras, host adapter cards, hubs, repeaters, external hard drives, computers and many others are increasingly susceptible to bus power disruption or failure when FireWire cables are connected or disconnected from their ports. Often high voltage and high surge current (ESD, or electrostatic discharge) results in pulses that can easily damage or burn out connected FireWire devices and their ports. These problems can often cost hundreds or sometimes thousands of dollars to repair or replace. By using the FW-ESDP-DS9, user's can guard against this, protecting expensive and critical FireWire equipment.

Protection from high surge voltage and high surge current from the power source when connected.
Protects unequal ground potential device (usually operated by battery) from discharging to the connecting lower potential device while connected.
