Vivitar VIV-2X4-N overview

  • 1Description

The Vivitar 2x 4-Elements Teleconverter for Nikon cameras is a precision optical component designed to expand your photographic capabilities. This premium quality 2x teleconverter, effectively doubles the focal length of the lens it's used with and maintains the resolution and contrast of any fine optic. The 2x teleconverter extender will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 2x, and will cut back the amount of light by 2 f/stops. For example, using a 2x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 600mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/5.6. Autofocus is not always maintained when using a teleconverter especially with slower lenses at apertures above f/4.

Use with NIKKOR lenses that are f/2.8 or faster is recommended. Because use of a 2x teleconverter incurs a 2-stop light-loss, the camera's autofocus system may not function correctly; manual focus would still be available in this situation. This teleconverter will maintain aperture control, manual/auto/program/etc., with all AF-AFS autofocus NIKKOR lenses.

Multi-coated Optical Glass with anti-reflection coating
Doubles focal length of lenses
Compatible with Nikon D3000, D300s, D3100, D5000, D700, D7000, and D90 cameras
NIKKOR lenses designated as G AFS will autofocus.
NIKKOR lenses designated as G will NOT autofocus.
All other NIKKOR lenses - AF, AF-D, AFS, etc - will autofocus.

    Vivitar VIV-2X4-N reviews

Series 1 Teleconverter For All Nikon DSLRs is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never leave home without it At first I thought I was not going to be happy with this because, like a lot of people are saying, it's not truly an AF item. But, because I really like shooting in manual mode more anyway, that little detail was immediately dismissed. I love this telecoverter. I use it mostly with my Sigma 70-300 lens in manual mode. Because it can read the settings on my camera, I don't have to depend totally on setting the ISO to get the shot like I do with my 500 lens which is manual only. I was surprised by the weight of this. Using it with the 300 lens, I can't do without a tripod. I can manage hand held with a 200 lens to a fair degree. Bottom line. The price is great and with some practice, you'll love using this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works with broad range of Nikon lenses This teleconverter works with a broad range of Nikon lenses whereas the Nikon 1.7X teleconverter works with only a couple Nikon lenses based on their physical construction. The clarity/detail of the Vivitar has yet to be put to the test but visually through the view finder it appears to be OK. That's not great, wonderful, or outstanding...just OK. My recommendation would be a tacit OK if losing some resolution/clarity is acceptable to the user. In my case the application is to take photos of the August 21st full solar eclipse where detail is probably going to be lacking until the eclipse is full, and then it's questionable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love the 2X Teleconverter !!! I have a Nikon Camera & Many Nikon Lens that I bought from B&H. I used the 2X Teleconverter with the 300mm lens & it made it 600mm with no problem. Now when it gets warmer I will be able to get shots of all the things I bought this for. Very Happy with the service of B&H from start to finish.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good bang for the buck in a teleconverter For the price that you pay, you get a functioning 2x teleconverter for dxxxx series Nikon camaras with DX lenses....May have to resort to manual focus on tele-zoom lenses,tho....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from OK for Nikon D3200 & 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Lens Works OK for my camera and lens. Auto-focus is slower and tends to hunt. Not a problem for manual focus. Image is a little soft at maximum zoom. Backing off from maximum zoom sharpens the image a bit while still giving greater zoom that without the teleconverter. Maximum aperture is reduced by two f-stops which effect shots in lower light. Still great for Moon shots.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does not work well with Sigma lenses I bought this to use with my new Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM II, but it doesn't focus well. It stays there jumping and does not focus, specially at 200mm, which was what I intended to shoot the most. As far as I can see, it works well with Nikon lenses (tried the 50mm) and Tokina as well (tried the 100mm f/2.8), but with this Sigma lens it doesn't, and I bought it specifically for this lens...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would by this product again. I use this Teleconverter for my Wildlife pictures. Getting close enough with this Vivitar Series 1 Teleconverter lets me get the pictures that I'm trying to get while not disturbing the Wildlife.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It does the job, but rather twitchy with autofocus Its a good alternative to spending big bucks for a telephoto lens. It does however have a tendency to hunt in the autofocus, I suggest you just turn autofocus off when using this converter. image quality is good, overall quality is good, but bear in mind, its a tele converter, not a $2,000 lens, and it won't make your $300 lens look or perform like a $2000 telephoto lens.
