Pearstone SB-4 overview

  • 1Description

The Pearstone SB-4 is an AC adapter that allows the Vivitar 283 and 285HV flash units to be powered by 110V household current. This is especially useful for use in the studio. The adapter will also decrease the flash recycling time down from 10.4 seconds to 4.8 seconds, and it has a 6' (1.8 m) cord.

Note: The 283 and 285HV flashes require fresh AA batteries to be installed, even when using the AC adapter. With 285HV models manufactured after 2006, only alkaline batteries will allow the adapter to deliver proper voltage.

The SB-4 replaces the Vivitar SB-4 (239404) AC Adapter.

Note: NOT compatible with original 285 non-HV models, which required the SB-6 adapter.

    Pearstone SB-4 reviews

    SB-4 AC Adapter for Vivitar 283 & 285HV Flashes is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, once it's made to fit I have three of these that have been working well for me, reducing my full-strength recycle times from more than 10 seconds down to 5 or six seconds. Some people have noted difficulty with the fit of the plug. My two cents -- Inside the plug at the end of the cord are sleeves that enclose the pins on the body of the flash. From the factory, these sleeves were too tight, and made it very difficult to seat the plug. I spread the sleeves slightly with the prong of a fork, just enough to make the plug go on smoothly but still make firm contact. Now the plug seats smoothly, and the power supply works well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheap at twice the price Read the B+H reviews before purchasing, but I'm unable to understand the reviewers that said it didn't fit correctly. The flash must be turned off before inserting the connector. There's a plastic tab that prevents you from inserting the plug if the flash is on. Likewise, once the plug IS inserted, you can't move the power switch. It WON'T decrease the recycle time. A fresh set of batteries takes the same time to recycle as the SB-4. Also can't understand the statement that it needs batteries installed. Mine worked fine without batteries, and a look at the schematic reveals that the batteries are disconnected when the power supply is correctly inserted.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well, plugs are hard to use I bought two of these for my Vivitar 285HV flashes. These work fine, note that you DO need to have fully charged alkaline batteries in the flash for this to work. I knocked a star off because the plugs can be a bit tough to attach to the flash. I had to bend the pins on one of my flashes to make it work. I would buy these again - they have improved my cycle time and allowed me to shoot for long periods without swapping multiple battery sets. The cords are a bit short when you have flashes high on light stands - plan to have plenty of extension cords.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Doesn't fully power flash I don't know everything there is to know about photography, so I know this is user error, but when I buy an AC adapter, I expect it to power the device that I am attaching it to. This is NOT the case with the SB-4. It only powers part of the flash and still requires FULL batteries at all times in order to work. Prior to purchasing, I had read that batteries needed to be in place in order for it to work, but I had just presumed that that was in order for the current to flow through. I bought the 285HV and the SB-4 because I was looking for a compact flash that was powered by AC for an installation. I'm sure it's a great adapter for a great flash, but it does not do what I would expect it to do. It's going back to the store.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New life for my vivitar 285 hv flash My flash is out of warranty and the capacitor needs a lot of rehab on the first use. This can kill a set of batteries before you take your first snapshot. This sb4 adapter allows me to recondition the capacitor in a few minutes (about 10 manual flash cycles). This gets the cycle times much shorter then I switch back to batteries. The sb4 adapter is surprisingly heavy for its small size and I wish the power cable to the flash was about 5 feet longer but this is tolerable with a household extension cord

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keep those Great Vivitar 283s Going Simple but essential. Keep several ever great Vivitar 283s going strong. Nothing fancy but works as advertised and essential for not burning through those double A's.Leave it to B&H to have them!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A little quicker than fresh batterys This has about a 7 second cycle rate. I was hoping for a little faster but for the money it is worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from this saves me money in batteries I go through a lot of batteries with three flashes. This will save batteries for two if the flashes
