Voigtlander BA2431 overview

  • 1Description

Blending a compact form factor with versatile performance, the Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 SC from Voigtlander is a fast wide-angle prime designed for M-mount rangefinder cameras. Using a symmetrical optical design, along with high refractive index glass, distortion and spherical aberrations are controlled in order to realize a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and even illumination. This lens also features a single coating, as opposed to a more common multi-layered coating, which offers a subtler image quality with slightly reduced contrast that is especially well-suited to black and white photography. Its manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 2.3' away and a 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality to suit working with shallow depth of field.

Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture helps control depth of field for shallow depth of field shooting, and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
A symmetrical optical design, along with high refractive index glass, is used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for improved clarity, sharpness, and even illumination.
Single-layer coating helps to reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color neutrality, however this coating is intentionally less effective than common multi-layered coatings in order to produce a dreamy, less contrast-rich image quality well-suited to black and white imagery.
Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 2.3'.
A 10-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Compatible with optional LH-6 lens hood.

    Voigtlander BA2431 reviews

Nokton Classic 35mm f/1.4 SC Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice for the price! This is my first non-Leica lens. I use it mainly for night photography in tight places (restaurants/bars) with a Leica MP. It is a very reasonable alternative to the 35mm Summilux pre-Asph, for 1/3 the price (as far as optical performance). In my opinion a comparison with the Asph Summilux is not valid as the two are very apart in both price and performance. It is not as well build as my other Leica lenses. It is compact, and has a very protective hood. Sometimes it does flare, but I don't find that a big problem as it is occasional. There is strong barrel distortion, but this is not a problem for the kind of photography I use this for. It is fairly sharp and with a unique signature. The bokeh can sometimes be confusing, but again, it's like the flare issue, it doesn't enter all that often, so I don't mind. I did not notice any focus shift in my sample, even at minimum focusing distance (note that I use film, so it may not be as onvious). Overall, for the price it is a wonderful lens, and you can use it in the meantime as you save for the 35mm Summilux ASPH.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic for street This is not a lens for pixel peepers. It is not a lens for sharpness freaks or for those who value a distortion-free image from corner to corner. Okay, that out of the way, this is one of my favorite lenses for street photography where none of the above matters at all. It has barrel distortion, flare (moderate) and is soft in the corners with noticeable vignetting, which all make this a lousy lens from a technical standpoint, and a beautiful lens for actual photography of just about anything except (most) architecture. People look great through this lens, as do textures, light and shadow. This lens was just made for black and white photography and practically lives on my Leica M Monochrom. In fact, this has a very similar rendering to the Pre-Aspherocal Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux, only it is sharper in the center wide open and about the same everywhere else. I believe that Cosina modeled this after the old Leica lens and while it lacks the prestige, it more than captures the look. This lens, along with a 1950 Canon 28mm f/2.8 LTM, Leica 50mm Summilux v2 (and too many other ancient 50s to list) and a 1960 Leica 90mm f/2.8 Elmarotake up my vintage lens kit despite this being a brand new lens.
