Sony 28-75mm f/2.8 SAM Overview

Make sure you have all your bases covered by keeping this compact 28-75mm f/2.8 SAM Lens from Sony with your full-frame A-mount camera. It delivers a wide-angle to short telephoto range that will satisfy many, as well as a constant f/2.8 aperture for consistent performance at all focal lengths. Ensuring top performance is the use of three extra-low dispersion elements and four aspherical elements, effectively combating and minimizing any aberrations.

For fast operation, the 28-75mm is equipped with a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM), which works with an internal focus design to provide smooth and quiet focusing. Also, it has a zoom lock switch to prevent lens creep when not in use. Other benefits of this lens include a minimum focus distance of 15" and a seven-blade circular aperture diaphragm.

Covering wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives, this standard full-frame 28-75mm zoom will serve as a relatively compact all-around lens choice, covering a variety of different shooting scenarios. It can also be used on APS-C cameras where it has an equivalent focal length of 42-112.5mm.
A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Three extra-low dispersion glass elements are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Four aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
By incorporating a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) unit into the lens itself to drive the focusing element group, this lens is able to deliver smoother, quieter, and faster performance than coupled systems. Also, the internal focusing design helps to achieve a minimum focus distance of 15".
A zoom lock switch prevents the lens barrel from accidentally extending when not in use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Impressive  initial experience:  An outstanding lens.

I  received this open box lens from a different vendor than B & H (my favorite).  My initial impressions are as follows.  I bought it as a walk around lens and I am in not in any way disappointed.  This is a compromise when compared with my a mount f2.8 SAL2470Z2, but it will easily do 90-95% of what the 2470 will do in the real world st 40% the cost.  It is lighter and far more compact.  Yes, you can peep a few more pixels using the big lens; but, I cannot tell any real difference in my work when comparing the two lenses on my A99 II . Keep in mind that this is still a constant f2.8 lens.  The zoom range is not an issue with me.  It is insanely sharp at f4 and  only minimally less so at f2.8.  Contrast and color rendition are great  AF is spot on and the is little need to tweak it in MF. I will mention a few cons, but they are not worth dwelling on.  This is a short lens so you may put you fingers on the focusing ring as it auto focuses.  You will soon learn to put you fingers where they belong. There is no DMF setting, but the MF/AF lens button is handy.  I have been a professional photographer for 61 of my 80 years.  Most of my photography is now personal, focusing on family. travel and landscapes.  I look forward to using this great little lens.   RAD

I got this lens with my new Sony NEX VG 900 it was way over priced and the quality of this lens is not very good. I would have rather got a different lens with my camera.

I bought a99 and this lens back in December and got the camera in 2 days. According to the shipping date i was suppose to get the lens on Dec 18, then it changed to Dec 28th. Finally i got my lens Feb 23rd, yes talk about luck.....I am an amateur and this is my first ever camera and lens combination. So far i am impressed with the picture quality. The built quality is average, has the old SAM focusing motor, but i don't mind it because for the price i paid, this lens is amazing. Plus Sony took off $200 from the bill for the long delay.

Just an excellant all round lens which could have been made better if the focus was quite. When you pay $ for a lens, you do not expect to hear the lens focus noise. Nice compact lightweight design.

I got this lens as a promotion for the purchase of a Sony A99. I am new to FF photography and didn't know what I was really getting, although for the price it should be a decent lens. Well as it turns out it is a very decent lens. According to all the lens reviews it doesn't get a very high grade, but they are wrong. Listening to the experts, I decided to upgrade to a Zeiss 24-70mm lens, which gets substantially better reviews. I have extensively tested the real world image quality between these lenses. The Zeiss does have better contrast images but the difference in image quality is so close as to be almost be non-existent. At 28mm this lens is quite often sharper than the Zeiss at 24mm. A mid and high focal lengths the Zeiss is generally but not always slightly, slightly better. The Zeiss is a tank compared this lens. It feels like I have a cinder block around my neck. I sent the Zeiss back and now only use this lens. The more I use this lens the better I like it. If you buy the Zeiss 24-70mm you'll sometimes get slightly better image quality and sometimes you will get poorer image quality, if you blow them up and view side by side. If you like having a tank around your neck and have lots of money buy the Zeiss otherwise this lens is twice the bargain. A side note: my 20 year old $85 Minolta 50mm f/1/7, quite often get better pictures than either lens at 50mm, go figure.

Will this lens work well on a A350? I use the 28-70 stock lens that came with t he camera but the photos most always seem to be soft. I will be going on an extended trip this fall and to be sure I have a lens that will produce crisp images.
