Primarily designed for close-up shooting, the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM from Canon is a versatile L-series short telephoto prime that is also well-suited for portraiture and other mid-range subjects. As a macro lens, however, this 100mm offers a life-size, 1:1 maximum magnification and an 11.8" minimum focusing distance. Complementing close-up shooting, an Image Stabilizer is featured that minimizes camera shake by two stops at full 1:1 magnification, or up to four stops at lower magnifications for sharper handheld shooting. Also contributing to smooth and intuitive handling, a ring-type USM and internal focusing design offers quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. In regard to its optical assets, one ultra-low dispersion element is featured, to control color fringing and chromatic aberrations, and a Super Spectra coating has been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, as an L-series lens, this 100mm f/2.8 is weather-sealed for working in inclement conditions.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Reviews
I would never regret of this purchase. Have helped me a lot and is so sharp and clean.
Edit: Loose Elements
B & H responded to my review loose elements stating that the rattle isn't a loose lens but the autofocus. Ran a few tests after visiting the Canon site. There's still a little rattle but not as bad. The focus seems sharp but the autofocus is still a little hesitant. I can live with that as long as focus stays sharp. Not one of Canon's more solid feeling lenses. Have to use it more to see if I warm up to it.
Bought new from B & H. I have used 3 times total. Pictures are sharp but autofocus is very slow. Then, I just noticed a rattle. Seems to be a loose lens element. Googled and it appears to be a common problem. I doubt Canon will cover the repair seeing it is probably out of warranty. Not good for a $1000 lens. I am very disappointed. Was hoping to make this one of my main lenses.
Great lens quick focus. Sharp. I'm using this for underwater photography and extremely pleased.
Love it, Love it, Love it!
Money well spent! Canon never fails to provide top quality products.
New to Macro, Let's Go!
Purchased this Macro lens to capture more close-ups photos. Just starting to explore the settings, lighting, etc. to capture clear photos, better to use a tripod to omit any blur.
A whole new world!
This a fabulous lens in quality and features and opens up the whole new world of macro, in which cool photographic adventures happen in what would otherwise by just mundane everyday life!
A joy To use !
This lens is a real joy to use with excellent, solid, and well balanced build quality - sharp and reliable focus - longer, more useful, distance to subject than many other macro lenses - super color and white balance with reliable, repeatable results. Worth the cost. Just plain good. You will enjoy this lens. My customers and friends are impressed with my macro work and (don't tell anyone, but i do it all hand-held in a simple home studio with a couple of cheap studio strobes) and results are top end professional quality. Just get one and never look back. TT
