Primarily designed for close-up shooting, the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM from Canon is a versatile L-series short telephoto prime that is also well-suited for portraiture and other mid-range subjects. As a macro lens, however, this 100mm offers a life-size, 1:1 maximum magnification and an 11.8" minimum focusing distance. Complementing close-up shooting, an Image Stabilizer is featured that minimizes camera shake by two stops at full 1:1 magnification, or up to four stops at lower magnifications for sharper handheld shooting. Also contributing to smooth and intuitive handling, a ring-type USM and internal focusing design offers quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. In regard to its optical assets, one ultra-low dispersion element is featured, to control color fringing and chromatic aberrations, and a Super Spectra coating has been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, as an L-series lens, this 100mm f/2.8 is weather-sealed for working in inclement conditions.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Reviews
Canon L magic for macro and short telephoto prime
Sharp as a tack in macro and as a short tele prime with pleasing bokeh. I still have the 5D III but now trying it with and adapter to a mirrorless from another manufacturer. I did a similar setup last year when making a large set of family photographs, using the adapter, the 70~200 2.8 EF L and mirrorless and wow, Images looked great!
Great lens
I purchased this lens a couple months ago and have used it more then any other lens I own. Sharp and crisp photos and the auto focus is super fast on my 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV. One complaint I have noticed from others is it does not feel like a $1300 lens and I would agree. It doesn't feel as heavy duty as some other Canon lens but I don't know if that really matters as long it produces sharp photos. I have a Canon 70mm to 200mm and a Canon 100mm to 400mm and I know they will be damaged just as this lens would be if dropped. If you want an awesome macro lens, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro IS USM lens is the way to go in my opinion. d
Learning experience
Just started using this lense but works very good. Still learning some things about it. Have a 70-210 macro lense for my Minolta 202 slr that I love. The canon lense is just as good.
Awesome
Have had this lens for many years now and I love how sharp it is...
My absolute favorite lens
I love this lens. It takes the most beautiful pictures. It is crisp and amazing. The image stabilization is a complete game changer. Being able to shoot macro freehand is unreal. I use it for food photography but it would also be amazing for nature photography. You can really get those super sharp macro shots of a bee on a flower or rain drops on leaves. I use it with my Canon 6D Mark II. My go to lens before this was 24-70 but now I find I use that less and less in favor of this lens.
Wonderful Lens
I would never regret of this purchase. Have helped me a lot and is so sharp and clean.
High-Quality Detail
First time out in the field with this lens and it stood up well to the cold temps, sideways rain, and wind that Spring tends to bring to the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. It was easy to use, even for an amateur like me. After considering this purchase for quite a while I'm happy to have made the investment. I can hardly wait to take this lens hiking and be able to capture the finer details of the forest. What a great addition to my already-found love of landscape/nature photography. Photos were taken with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II, which was also purchased through B&H.
Super sharp lens.
This Canon EF 100mm 2.8 L portrait lens is exceptionally sharp. Because of its wide focusing range in take a little time to lock focus but in not a problem. It is an excellent close up lens and a great portrait lens as well. It's fairly compact but does sport a super large lens hood that can be annoying. The new RF version is excellent as well but it is not compatible if you shoot say an R5 and 5D.
