Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Overview

  • 1Description

Primarily designed for close-up shooting, the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM from Canon is a versatile L-series short telephoto prime that is also well-suited for portraiture and other mid-range subjects. As a macro lens, however, this 100mm offers a life-size, 1:1 maximum magnification and an 11.8" minimum focusing distance. Complementing close-up shooting, an Image Stabilizer is featured that minimizes camera shake by two stops at full 1:1 magnification, or up to four stops at lower magnifications for sharper handheld shooting. Also contributing to smooth and intuitive handling, a ring-type USM and internal focusing design offers quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. In regard to its optical assets, one ultra-low dispersion element is featured, to control color fringing and chromatic aberrations, and a Super Spectra coating has been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, as an L-series lens, this 100mm f/2.8 is weather-sealed for working in inclement conditions.

Short telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 160mm equivalent focal length.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.8" to suit working with close-up subjects.
One ultra-low dispersion (UD) element greatly reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. The effectiveness of this system compensates for up to two stops of camera shake at 1:1 magnification, three stops at 1:2 magnification, and four stops at lower magnifications.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), and internal focusing design, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to three different ranges for faster focusing performance: 11.8"-1.6', 1.6'-infinity, and the full 11.8"-infinity range.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Optional rotating tripod collar is available and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Reviews

EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 1856.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite lens!!! I had wanted to buy a dedicated macro lens, and after debating this versus the non-L version I make the leap and purchased this lens. Within a month, this has become my absolute favorite lens! If I could only keep one lens this would be it. In addition to its macro capabilities, which are great (especially if you add a Canon 25mm extender), the optics and bokeh on this lens are superb!!! The level of detail it captures, even at f/2.8, is simply amazing. Portraits, hummingbirds, dragonflies, you name it. This lens has the clarity and speed to do so much more than just macro. If you are thinking about it, just get it. You won't regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! This is a sweet lens. I've been using a regular 100mm f2.8 mainly for product shots for about six months, generally small items such as watches, jewelry and knives. I decided to upgrade to this newer version for the IS as there are times when I like to do quick shoots outdoors without my tripod. It is still early days but so far I've been very impressed with the AF speed, sharpness and build quality. The IS gyros are a little noisy but nothing objectionable. The AF will rack completely if you go from something up close to a landscape for instance but my older lens does the same thing. The bokeh is very nice indeed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet lens Have used this lens for photographing flowers in my dining room tabletop studio. The captures have been remarkable. Crisp, with great detail, some of which I didn't see until I was working in Photoshop and could maginify well past 100%. Waiting for the rotating tripod collar ring to complete this lens. So far, have only used in manual focus mode, which has been a treat given my vision issues. And the focus has been dead on. I am truly glad that I added this lens to my gear as it has allowed me to capture images I haven't been able to up to now. I had been using a 300mm F/4.0 for macro work, which is a great lens out in the field, but indoors the 100 rocks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Where can I start, I have been having dreams about buying this lens, and finally I went ahead and spent major bucks, but it was worth it. From the very first picture I had taken, I fell in love instantly and I try to use this lens as much as possible. Even @ 100mm focal length, its still my first choice lens for portrait photography. Not forgetting the main purpose of this lens is to take close up photos, I can assure you that you will be amazed on how close you can get to the subject, plus the fine details this lens can pick up. Overall, if you have the money then don't even think twice, a must for macro and portrait photography.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't blink, buy! Oh she is SAH-WEET! My first 'real' macro lens, and I am just in a lusty flowery dust! This lens just takes my breath away. I never thought I could lose my breath from a lens... I just didn't think I could be that into a lens. From the moment we met, I was smitten. Then I saw my photos on a full size screen. I was simply gobsmacked. Flowers, strawberries, tacos, and sunsets... she loves them all! I am constantly looking for more shots to use her. Added the tripod collar, and the polarizer to the purchase and if you have never used a tripod collar, I impress upon you, get it! Can't recommend this lens enough. Do it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another excellent Canon lens This purchase was an upgrade from the non-IS Canon Lens of the same size, so I am able to compare the 2. Overall, I feel it gives me more of an added edge when I am shooting hand held little critters. It is difficult to put a specific percentage on the increase of stable images, but I would guess at least 2x at a minimum. Also, the option of altering the Auto-focus's search distance 3 different settings really does stop the AF roaming you get with the non-IS version. It also appears to lock focus faster than the non-IS. If hand held is your shooting style, then it's worth the extra money in my humble opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Lens Extremely sharp lens with very fast AF and outstanding IS. The build quality is solid, despite the plastic barrel, built to very tight tolerances. To the reviewer below who doesn't think Ls should be plastic: I hope you realize that there are a LOT of plastic Ls, including the 135L, 50L, 35L, 24L II, 17-40L and a few more. Anyway, bokeh is very nice, with beautiful color and contrast, with no loss of contrast wide open. Extreme corners on full frame are slightly soft wide open (though more than usable) and quite sharp by f/4. Center 90% of frame is absolutely tack sharp straight from f/2.8. Perhaps the highest resolving lens I have ever used, including the 85L, 135L and several other macro lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the Upgrade I liked the non-L version of this lens quite a bit, & got some wonderful photos with it. I was very hesitant to upgrade to the L IS version because I had read that there wasn't much to be gained by upgrading. I finally bit the bullet, sold my other lens, & ordered this one. It turned out to be a very worthwhile upgrade! Although the other lens was very sharp, I did get slightly blurry photos at times due to camera shake. That is not happening with this lens. Images are tack sharp! Less frustration - more fun taking photos. Even though this is a "professional" lens, it is a wonderful choice for anyone, even amateurs (perhaps especially amateurs!).

Canon only has one version of the L-series Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens, which was originally released by Canon in 2009. While we do not have information on when a specific lens was manufactured, the L-series Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens was originally released in 2009. According to the information we have, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens' country of origin is Japan. question

What extension tubes are simple and work well with Canon 1.6 crop cameras?
Asked by: Anonymous
All extension tubes are simple to use (as there are no mechanics, optics, or moving parts; it is simply a tube connecting the lens to the camera) and most all are compatible with both full-frame and APS-C crop sensor cameras. However, if you are looking for an option that is compatible for use with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens, then the options which I would recommend would be either the Canon Extension Tube EF 25 II, B&H # CAETEF25Q, or the Canon Extension Tube EF 12 II, B&H # CAETEF12Q. However, the more popular option would be one of the kits that include three extension tubes which would offer more flexibility. The Kenko Auto Extension Tube Set DG for Canon EOS Lenses, B&H # KEAETSCD, and the Vello Auto Extension Tube Set for Canon EOS, B&H # VEEXTCD, are the most popular options we carry compatible for your needs. All of the above options retain automatic focus and automatic exposure when used with Canon EOS DSLR cameras.

question

Will this lens, mounted on a 5D MkII on a copystand, photograph color transparencies (filling the frame) without having to use screw-in close up lenses? (the transparencies are on a Kaiser Slimlite light pad on the copystand table) If not would it work with an APS-C camera body (without having to use the screw in closeup filters)?
Asked by: Barry M.
This superb lens will easily photograph 35mm transoceanic without additional accessories with a full frame or APS-C camera on your copy stand.
