Sunpak PZ42X Overview

The Sunpak PZ42X TTL Flash is a flash unit designed to fully support current advanced digital SLR cameras. It is fully compatible with Sony/Minolta ADI / P-TTL enabled cameras.

The PZ42X has many advanced features, such as: automatic zoom head from 24-105mm, bounce and swivel capabilities, built in wide angle diffuser, and AF assist. It also offers several manual controls for the experienced photographer. It offers a bright and easy-to-read LCD display and easy-to-use controls for manual flash output, digital or film lens coverage and zoom head settings.

AF Assist Light supports better autofocus performance in the dark (up to 16')
EV adjustment (-1.5, -1, -0.5, 0, +0.5, +1, +1.5)
Large panel with bright, easy-to-read LCD display
Flash-coverage scale on LCD screen

I use my PZ42X for general indoor photography. I like its compact size, ease of use, and versatility. However, I am a little disappointed in its recycling time, as it is much slower than I expected from a Sunpak, even with fresh batteries.

I use this flash when I am going somewhere indoors where I cannot bring my lighting equipment (obviously) and it doesn't seem to take much battery for each flash. The flash is so precise that it doesn't seem to jarring to people being photographed, like some flashes do. So far haven't had any complaints about it.

It has a good light and speed, but the recharge time is slow when you have to take lot of photos and need to change the batteries again and again.

I have a Canon 80D. The PZ42X flash will not flash. I am getting a the following message Menu not availble. FLash is off or unsupported, or an accessory is attached . A Cano logo flash works without issue. Does anyone with a Canon 80D have this flash, and if so, does it work?

Fortunately, we have both items on display in the store. Unfortunately, after testing, the flash will not work with the 80D. Tested the flash with 7D mk 1 and 2 and it worked fine. Can't say what the problem in communication is.
