The Canon EW-78E Lens Hood is primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the hood is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. This dedicated lens hoods is designed for the Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens.

Canon EW-78E reviews

EW-78E Lens Hood is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 114.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheap Insurance I always keep a lens hood on lenses. They are less expensive than even the cheapest filter and they provide a few more inches of separation between the front element and disaster without effecting the image quality. The Canon lens hoods are high quality and the EW-78E is the traditional bayonet style so it's secure on the lens, doesn't impact any filters that you do use and they're reversable for transport. The EW-78E is also wide enough to get your fingers in to remove the lens cap. It's just a shame Canon doesn't include them with the higher priced EF-S lenses like they do with the L series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product This product is perfect, good quality, easy to use, helps to take good shots without the effect of unwanted light, protects the lens for accidents. I wanted to give 4 stars, because this product belongs to a lens that's about 700$ by the time. There's a L class lens at the same price. When you buy a L class lens it comes with a lens hood. Canon's policy No L class, no lens hood is silly. Lens hood must come with the lenses depending on the price. Anyway, i have a Canon Zoom Pack 1000 Holster-Style Bag. When the hood is reverse mounted to the lens with my T2i body it fits perfect to the bag. This information may help someone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a Lens Hood Well, it's a lens hood. It's got a nice texture and it feels solid. It's hard to tell if it's doing what it's supposed to do, since flare does not exactly occur frequently in the first place. At least, it's easy to install on the lens (since the front element doesn't rotate) and it is equally easy to remove it. I find that, when I'm wearing leather gloves, the hood is big enough that it prevents me from being able to remove the lens cap, and I also feel that it doesn't offer enough protection to necessarily do away with putting the lens cap on each time I'm not taking pictures (when the camera's either slung over my shoulder or in my bag).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from EW -78E lens hood for Canon 15-85 EFS This is the lens hood that should have come with the lens. It fits and works perfectly, is beautifully finished, with soft flocking on the inside. It's a requirement for this lens, which has a tendency to flare w/o it. But it is much too expensive at $.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from a must have for the canon 15-85 EFS lens If you are shooting with the Canon EF-S 15-85mm USM lens, this is a must-have accessory. It noticeably reduces and controls vignetting (as in I don't see any; without the hood vignetting is an issue), and as a plus with all lens hoods adds an extra barrier of protection between the glass and a potential accident. However for the price of the lens, Canon should be including this hood with it (Canon only includes lens hoods with their L-series glass). I am relatively new to the world of SLRs and photography, and in the short time I have owned this hood, I am very satisfied with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wise decision This is the third Canon lens hood I've bought from B&H, and it was a wise decision. I decided to pay the extra for the Canon hood after reading other reviewers were not able to reverse the generic brand hoods on their Canon EF-S 15-85 lenses. I've used the hood for almost two weeks, and it has protected my photos from flares. The hood's felt interior surface was also a selling point. I do agree with others the lens hood should come with the lens. So far, no problems. I've used lens hoods since the mid-1970s (showing my age), and this is one of the best.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Functions as it should This lens hood fits my Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens perfectly, is easy to attach and remove, and I have no problems with using it with filters and the lens cap. Does not seem to have the fingerprinting or scratch issues of earlier versions. The only reason I am deducting a star is it is too expensive - and should have been included with my lens. Shame on Canon for nickel and diming us this way.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good if not using flash The hood works great at all focal lengths if not using flash. However, once you use flash, you should detach the hood when you are zoomed in. Otherwise, you will notice dark spots in the bottom parts of the pictures because the hood blocks the flash. Otherwise the construction is good. The interior side of the hood has a felt lining which is good in absorbing moisture/droplets of water if you happen to be out in the rain. I would imagine that without the felt, the water droplets would slide towards the lens and leave marks there.
