Tiffen 77mm T1 Infrared Filter

Tiffen 77mm T1 Infrared Filter
Key Features
  • Removes Infrared From CMOS/CCD Sensors
  • Provides a Broader Spectrum of Color
  • Captures More Subtle Red Hues
  • Blacks Appear Crisper
The 77mm T1 Infrared Filter from Tiffen is a high-tech filter targeted towards eliminating infrared contamination at 680nm. This filter will assist you in maintaining your color spectrum when shooting against a dark fabric. You will notice the blacks turn out true with no color cast from the red end of the spectrum.

This filter has been created to help capture a much broader spectrum of color than previous infrared filters - particularly with digital camcorders.  Color shift is a critical factor in digital photography especially when dealing with the infrared spectrum - and even more important when shooting with HD technology.
Unlike traditional film cameras, CCD or CMOS sensors of a digital camera are, by nature, susceptible to infrared contamination. Manufacturers try to avoid this problem by incorporating an infrared absorbing filter on top of the image sensor. Because these filters do not have a sharp cutoff at the infrared wavelengths there has to be a compromise in order not to exclude visible red wavelengths. Despite these precautions, some infrared wavelengths pass through resulting in contamination of the image.

Tiffen's Water White glass, using their ColorCore Technology, is characterized by a high transmission quality. Typically, it will transmit 98-99% of the light. It also features an anti-glare and anti-reflective quality that makes it useful in a wide range of uses including the movie theater industry, store and art displays. The glass is virtually defect-free and is becoming more and more prevalent in digital equipment.

Does this filter out UV as well as IR? Is there a light transmission graph for this filter anywhere? My goal is to find a filter that lets in UV (and visible is OK too), but not IR above 650 or 700nm. Thank you!

Hello, I did read a review telling that when using a IR/UV Cut filter on Wide Angle Lenses the image can be compromised: the interference varies with the angle of incidence of the light on the glass. This renders this filter unusable with wide-angle and even normal focal lenses, resulting in a greenish gradient from the center to the corners. - this was posted for the 72mm version of an IR/UV Cut filter of another brand.- Q: Did someone else has this problem on Full Frame & APS-C DSLRs with Wide Angle Lenses like 16mm with THIS Tiffen W77IR filter?Thank you very much!

Hi HD Cam T,I purchased this filter to correct a known IR contamination defect in the Sony EX-1 camcorder. Black suits turn different shades of brown depending on their material without the filter. An orchestra of black suits will look like everyone is wearing a different shade of off black tuxes. But some will be true black. I only use the filter when I need it. I manually white balance the camera when using the IR filter. The image has a green cast if you do not white balance. You also loose about a half an f stop with the filter. Not a perfect fix for my camera but it is the only one I have found.
