ZEISS 18mm f/3.5 overview

  • 1Description

The ultra-wide ZEISS Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-mount Cameras is a precision manual focus prime lens that provides excellent image performance over its entire image range from 0.98' (0.3 m) to infinity. Combined with the legendary ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating, the Distagon T* 18mm f/3.5 delivers brilliant pictures even under difficult lighting conditions. This professional lens, when mounted to a digital SLR using a DX-type sensor, has an effective focal length of 27mm (35mm equivalent).

ZF.2 lenses support all key modes (e.g. aperture priority, shutter priority, program AE or manual exposure settings) on camera models equipped with an electronic interface (e.g. current Nikon DSLR cameras). To do so, simply lock the aperture ring in the largest f-stop shown in orange.

On camera models without an electronic interface, the aperture is manually set on the lens aperture ring. With some camera models, it is possible to set in the menu whether the lens should be selected using the setting dial on the camera or the aperture ring on the lens. Please note that, for technical reasons, there is no halfway notch between the largest and second largest f-stop. The focused distance is not transmitted to the camera body.

    ZEISS 18mm f/3.5 reviews

    Distagon T* 18mm F/3.5 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F-Mount Cameras is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fixed focus lens Incredibly sharp out to the corners, great contrast. A far superior lens to any of Nikon's equivalent or even close focal length lenses. I have the Nikon 16-35mm F4 VR zoom and it is very sharp, though not so much as this lens. I also tend to use very little in between wide 16 or 18 and then 35mm so I am happy with this lens and a Nikon 35mm F2 - together they weigh less and take up less space in my bag than the one 16-35mm zoom. I also like that it isn't autofocus on my D800E - really, at 18mm who needs autofocus so long as you've got a good depth of field indicator on the lens, which this one does. Focus is smooth, the lens seems very well built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like A Tank Superb lens from Zeiss. Built like a tank, excellent finish, smooth manual focusing. I use this with a Nikon D3X and D3S. The high resolution of the D3X coupled with this lens has been excellent. The ZF.2 model works with Nikon's electronics and the cameras recognize the lens. No need to manually input the lens into the camera like the previous versions. No auto focusing, but apreature is read by the camera. Images are sharp from corner to corner. No distortion in the image. Excellent for use in architecture and landscapes. Interior shots work well with my SB-900. I have the Zeiss ZF.2 35mm f/2 lens, and both lens are quality glass for your Nikon cameras. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Wide-Angle Lens I use Zeiss ZF.2 lenses with a Nikon D800. I have the 35mm f/2.8 and the superb 25mm f/2. I also use Zeiss lenses from a Hasselblad on this camera. A full frame camera demands excellent optics. This 18mm lens is absolutely superb. The field of view is just what I need when shooting tight urban landscapes, and the sharpness is really incredible. Take a photo and then zoom the image on your Nikon and you can read small signs off in the background when using this lens. Clearly with no fuzzy edges! Resolution is almost second to none. This lens is not as sharp as the superb Zeiss 25mm f/2, however, it is still a fantastic lens. Zeiss is not the only maker of fine lenses out there, but nonetheless, my motto is: Go Zeiss or wonder what you may have missed! This lens is for those who don't need autofocus or image stabilization, and who just want to shoot with fine lenses the way Leica and Contax were in their day on film cameras. If you are that type of camera shooter, do not hesitate to buy this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zeiss doesn't let you down I have used the 18mm Zeiss Distagon ZF.2 for travel and landscapes. One needs to say nothing more than this lens stands alone in terms of image quality. My first experiences with Zeiss optics was in the late sixties when I owned and consistently used my Rollie E2 2.8 Zeiss Planar TLR. My thoughts today are the same as they were back then- these optics are simply in a different league. Color saturation and accuracy along with a solid build is nothing short of amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why Did I Wait So Long? I bought this lens to use on my D7100. It's probably one of the finest lenses that I've owned in a long time. The images are clean and tack sharp. To manually focus is easy with the in-camera focus indicator and it is silky smooth. I've used Zeiss lenses with my Contax cameras back in the day and I am realizing just what I've been missing out on all these years - sorry Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Pentax, Minolta, Sony etc. because I've used all those brands and more. There's just something about Zeiss that you notice over other lenses. I currently have a slew of Nikon DX and FX lenses but they don't get used anymore. Why you ask? Because I now have the perfect all-around lens for everything that I photograph. Inside and out. Now it's time for me to look for an FX body and more Zeiss lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens. Very light and small -easy to carry everyday Excellent lens, amazing colors, 18mm are very useful, also for everyday use. Love this lens. Manual focus is very easy at this focal length.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I now get what Zeiss is all about. Great wide angle lens. Manual focus is ok but I still prefer Autofocus on longer focal lengths. I was going to buy the Zeiss Distagon 21 f2.8 but already own the Nikor 24-70 f2.8 and decided the focal length of the 21 was too near the 24-70. Glad I did get this 18mm. IMHO its better than the 17-35 f2.8 (another great zoom lens) at 18mm. I traded in the 17-35 mainly to save weight in my camera bag. Trade offs!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Wide Angle If you purchase this with the intention of using it as a wide-angle landscape lens, outdoors at sunset or sunrise, you will be very satisfied. It's not overpriced (see Leica), won't auto focus, but will do what any well built lens should: offer the experienced photographer the ability to produce extremely crisp, sharp, high contrast images. Minor barrel distortion near the edges (just like every wide-angle DSLR lens) which can be cured easily via Photoshop. Stopped down, this lens does a very good job sharpening points of light into stars, which makes it good for night-time or twilight cityscape shots. I can't see a situation where I'd want to use this lens without a tripod...but with the high ISO DSLRs we have these days, it could easily be used hand-held if you want to. The 21mm and 15mm Distagons produce higher quality, sharper images with better overall contrast especially along the edges (and are faster lenses capable of producing better bokeh). I'd much rather opt for the 15 or 21 if I had to choose just one, but this is still a very capable and high quality lens. It feels like a Zeiss in your hands...solid as if hewn from cast iron, and the focus ring moves with a subtle smoothness that only Leica can match.
