Vanguard 263 AT overview

  • 1Description

Vanguard's Alta Pro 263 AT Aluminum Tripod is lightweight (4.4 lb) and an extremely versatile camera support. It features a unique Multi-Angle Central Column System (MACC) which allows you to position the center column at angles from 0 - 360° in variable vertical and horizontal positions. This gives you amazing flexibility in how your camera is positioned. Central column positioning is aided by the Vanguard Instant Swivel Stop-n-Lock (ISSL) System which allows secure and quick positioning of the central column in one simple movement, while keeping the tripod balanced and stable.

The tripod has a maximum load capability of 15.4 lb, extends to a maximum height of 65", and folds down to only 24.75", making it easy to transport. The minimum working height, with the legs closed and spread out wide to an almost flat 80°, is 6.25" -- excellent for macro-photography and low wide shots. The minimum extended height, meaning with the legs fully extended and the top bar at its lowest height, is 52.1". Adding further to the Alta Pro 263 AT's versatility are 3 section legs that can be independently positioned and secured with Quick flip leg locks, retractable spiked rubber feet, a bubble level and a retractable utility hook. These features make this tripod a great tool for most situations, particularly for travel, wide-angle and macro photography. It is quick and easy to operate, giving photographers the flexibility required to open the realm of creative possibilities.

    Vanguard 263 AT reviews

ALTA PRO 263AT ALUMINUM TRIPOD LEGS is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 108.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Versatile, won't last. I bought this tripod because the articulating boom is perfect for the product photography I do. It has seen less than 100 hours of use in the passed three years. First it got wobbly because the clamp that holds the boom angle became loose. It required tightening with an allen wrench every few months. Then the central column wouldn't tighten any more because the whole mechanism fell apart with pieces on the floor. With nothing locking the central column in place, it will not hold a position at all. The SBH-100 ball head has also lost its rubber grips and is leaking fluid. Vanguard looks good when you buy it, but it doesn't last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rigid and flexible I desired a sturdy tripod for those time I would be working close to my car or home and did not need a lightweight tripod. I was looking for something that would set up quick and simple. This fit the bill perfectly it is flexible in the many positions that it can be set to. Yet it is very sturdy for my 6 to 8 pounds of camera and lens. Though it can be adjusted from 0 to 180 degrees of center column tilt the first 25 degrees or so the center column must be fully extended so the bottom will clear the spider assembly that holds the legs. At this full extension there is some flex I am pleased with this tripod and I would purchase it again or recommend it to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Tripod for the money!! I use this tripod with a Canon 5dMkII with the 24-105mm and 70-200mm zooms. Stability is excellent. The tripod comes with a well made nylon drawstring bag which will easily hold the tripod with a ball head attached. The flexible center column positioning (between 0 and 180 degrees) is outstanding for macro work; I don't know of any other tripod in this price range with this feature. The only down side is the weight, about 4.4 lbs plus the weight of your chosen ball head. Without the center column extended, the height of the tripod is approximately 52 inches which is great for tall people like me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good First Tripod I have now had this tripod over two years. It has done fairly well. You can't beat it for the money. I have paired it up with the SBH250 ball head. It taught me many things I like and dislike. I like the snap levers for the legs. They have a firm positive grip. They provide a stable locking mechanism. I like the bubble level, it is easy to see. The upper part of the legs are padded and that makes it easy to carry. There is a nice bag included that will fit the tripod and head. Now to the dislikes. I don't care for the center levelers. The center post and center rotate levers are very similar and it is easy to confuse the two when concentrating on getting the shot or at night. The legs loosen up after time and have to be tightened. The set screw to tighten the legs is under the legs and a pain to get to. The center weight hook is too small and hard to use. I have tried to use my pack to weight it down, but it is impossible to use. Now the legs are becoming difficult to extend. I do like this tripod. It has taken a lot of abuse. I hoped it would last a little longer. If you want a light to medium duty tripod this is it. Make sure you tighten the set screws for the head. I had to learn that one when the head loosened up on the trail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vanguard Customer Service Used it to hold a 12 lbs camera-lens touring for 20 days in the jungles of Costa Rica. The tripod was greatly abused. Where the leg attaches to the center mount, a piece of metal finally broke. The tripod was still functional. When I returned, I mailed it back to Vanguard, they replaced the leg, and mailed it back. No charge! Since then I have upgraded to the slightly stronger 284CT pro, which I should have done from the start given my long lens weight. It is designed to hold more weight and where the leg piece broke is reinforced more on the 284CT. But the 263 AT is plenty strong for most smaller long lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy, Light and Versatile The basics: The Alta Pro 263 is very sturdy, well built and light for it's size and stability. I've used this with a Canon 5D with a 100-400mm lens. It holds that weight with no problems. The legs are only 3 sections which means it doesn't fold up as small as some others. However, this means it deploys very fast as you only have to open 2 clamps per leg for full extension. My previous tripod had 5 section legs and opening all those clamps got old. Also, more sections means thinner tubes and less stability. The leg tubes and clamps are very nice. The legs extend smoothly and the clamps are firm. The feet are large and steady with the ability to screw in to reveal terrain spikes. They seem well built as does the entire assembly. There is place at the top to attach a shoulder strap for carrying. I attached an old strap from a carry-on bag to this. On the other end of the strap I added a bungee cord which I loop around the feet of the the tripod. This allows the tripod to hang, inverted, from my shoulder very comfortably and out of the way when hiking. Once again, the lightness helps here. The bag that comes with the tripod is very well constructed. It has a carry strap and loads in from one end with two cinch cords to close it. It is long enough to accommodate the tripod and a good sized ball head (Manfrotto 468MGRC2). All load bearing areas of the bag are web reinforced. I prefer my shoulder strap for most things as it's quicker to deploy than a bag. Still, the bag is a nice addition and will last a long time I'm sure. Beyond the basics: The Alta's unique feature is it's central column. This makes this the most versatile tripod I've used. The column acts just like a standard tripod when that is what you want. If you need to reach an interesting angle over an obstruction or right down low to the ground, you just extend the column a bit farther and this allows the column to extend horizontally and then rotate to any angle you like. I've used it for overhead shots, to extend my camera over obstructions, for ground level shots and more. It really lets you put your camera where you want it quickly and easily. I was worried that this would be a cumbersome feature. It is not. I own a Benbo 1 and a Benbo Trekker. The Alta allows me to put my camera in the same odd positions faster and with more stability. I've taken this on many hikes and find it to be everything I need in a tripod. Just add your favorite ball head and you are good to go. I'm very please with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Sturdy and Solid This tripod is sturdy and pretty solid for what I need it for. I was able to sit my Nikon D3s and not worry about it being to support the weight. The Multi Angle Central Column System allows for a sand bag to be attached to the bottom to assist with the different angles. The feet have retractable spikes in case you need it on the surface you are working on or you can screw them in with a turn of the pad if you need the rubber on a delicate surface. I was pretty impressed with the design and cost. I was able to put the head from my other tripod which was pretty expensive to this one with a removal of a screw.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seemed Lightweight but works great... When I started to get serious about having a decent tripod I bought a heavy duty Slik. It's rock solid but big and heavy. This tripod seemed a little flimsy by comparison but it still works very well and the articulated arm center column is wonderful. The leg locks are resin but they work and the head is well made from Aluminum alloy. The head clamps are well designed and hold where you put them. The center arm will hold a Nikon D3 with large macro lens at nearly full extension IF you can keep the thing from turning over. Properly ballasted it is very nice for Macro work, the legs also lock at several angles permitting a wide base if you don't need maximum height. All in all I'm really happy with it, especially for the price. It's solid enough, very versatile, all the locks work good and it's fairly small and light. With this tripod I have a lot better chance at getting the camera where I want it and having it stay there.
