Zoom H4n Overview

This B&H Kit is designed to provide you with high-quality, convenient stereo audio recording and control. The kit consists of a Zoom H4n Handy Recorder, a remote control, headphones, and a 16 GB memory card.

The H4n recorder features true X/Y stereo mics with selectable recording patterns. It can record up to four channels of audio, with rates up to 24-bit/96kHz. XLR/TRS combo inputs let you connect a variety of gear. The recorder also features a built-in speaker and a 3.5mm output for connecting external speakers.

A USB 2.0 port makes it easy to transfer files to a Mac or PC, or use the H4n as a live audio interface. It has a backlit LCD for easy control, and can operate on AA batteries, USB power, or wall power for versatility.

Aside from controlling the recorder, the included wired remote prevents handling noise from entering your recording, since it eliminates the need to touch the recorder itself. The included 16GB card can hold hours upon hours of files, making sure that you never run out of space.

Cannot record audio on the Zoom SD card while the Zoom acts as a USB interface to the computer. This product fail my requirement to have a backup recording recorded on the Zoom internsl SD card when the USB interface or computer software hangs. Right?
Asked by: Donny Yeo
The H4N only does one thing at a time. If you are using it as an interface, then that's all it does. If you use it as a recorder then it's just a recorder.

question

The specs say there is 48 volt phantom power available, but is 48v available when you are using only the 2 AA batteries to power the unit?
Asked by: Gary
Yes you can use the phantom power when running the zoom on 2 AA batteries. The amount of battery life will cut down a great deal when it is turned on.

question

The specs say 48 volt phantom power is available, but is this 48v available when you are only using the 2 AA batteries to power the unit?
Asked by: Gary
Kind of - the phantom power does NOT last very long. I plugged it into a mic that needed phantom power and the batteries were drained within minutes. I do not recommend this product if you plan to need phantom power for long periods of time - or know you will need to plug it into another power source for longer usage.

question

As it's a multitrack recorder, can the various tracks be exported and the levels changed on them separately after recording? Or is it a question of having to get the relative levels right at recording and then there is just one file after comprised of all tracks?
Asked by: J 8.
If recording in 4 channel mode, which is the external inputs plus the built in, you will end up with two stereo files. The stereo file can easily be split into two mono files and adjusted using any audio editing software as well as most video editing software.

question

What Wireless Lavalier Microphone and transmitters would work well with this recorder? Would this be good for recording audio that would be later added to video recorded using a 70d in post production? If so what would be the best thing to do to make sure the audio and video match up as best as possible when adding in post production?
Asked by: Tyler S.
Premiere Pro has a 'sync' option that looks at the audio tracks and synchronizes.
