Nikon AF Micro NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED Overview

A unique macro lens characterized by its impressive working distance, the AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED from Nikon offers life-size 1:1 magnification and a 1.6' minimum focusing distance for photographing close-up subjects at a comfortable distance. Benefitting this special design is an optical system that includes a pair of extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy. A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements and minimizes flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in bright or backlit conditions. Close Range Correction also helps to ensure consistent image quality and accurate rendering throughout the focusing range while an internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length during operation and promotes faster focusing speeds. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 300mm equivalent focal length.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 1.6' to suit working with close-up subjects. Additionally, the lens's long focal length coupled with the macro design offers a notably long working distance of approximately 11.6" at 1:1.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Close Range Correction system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from the minimum focusing distance of 1.6' to infinity. Additionally, an internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Autofocus system is compatible with select Nikon DSLRs that support D-type lenses, and offers quick and precise focusing performance.

Autofocus is not supported by DSLRs lacking an autofocus motor, such as the D3000-series, D5000-series, D40, D40X, and D60, where the lens may be used with manual focus only.
A rotating tripod collar offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod with either vertical or horizontal shooting orientations.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

I use my Nikon 105mm F2.8 Micro lens for portraits all the time. Why are so many people here saying this 200mm Micro lens is not good for portrait photography?
Asked by: Willie
I think it may be because of the focal length. At almost twice the FL you need to be further away from your subject, especially if you’re doing full length shots. It may only be f/4 but it has such a steep focal plane transition that it seems like a lower f stop than it is. I have the 105/1.8, 105/2 DC, 135/2 DC, 200/2 VR, 200/4 Micro, and the 200-400/4 VR and they can all create superb portraits.

You would be limited to the 5 axis stabilization that the Nikon Z7 offers.

question

Will the D850 autofocus stack work with this lens?
Asked by: Lyman
No. That capability is only with AF-S and AF-P lenses. I use my 105 macro and it does "focus shifting" flawlessly. With the 200, you'll have to do manual focus stacks, i.e. shoot, re-focus, shoot, repeat.

question

Is this lens compatible with a Nikon D 500?
Asked by: vajirbhai
Yes. The Nikon AF-D f4 micro lens if fully compatible with the Nikon D 500 DX body. I use this lens on my D 500 all the time. I prefer to sue man ual focus for my macro images, but AF works too if you set AF on the lens.
