Sanken COS-11D Overview

The black Sanken COS-11D Omni Lavalier Microphone with Normal Sensitivity and Locking 3.5mm Connector for Sony Transmitters is a subminiature lav microphone designed to deliver clear, full-bodied sound and reliable performance, making it a popular choice among industry professionals in broadcast, TV, theater, film, videography, and more.

Engineered to meet the standards of modern digital wireless microphone systems, the COS-11D is RF shielded to eliminate interference issues and ensure a pristine audio signal. The microphone capsule features a rectangular design that sits vertically, increasing the surface area and allowing this tiny mic to offer a rich, full sound that outperforms many larger models.

The mic's 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response rolls-off extreme low end and provides accurate, transparent audio reproduction with a small presence boost in the 6 kHz area for crisp, intelligible speech. With a forgiving omnidirectional polar pattern that picks up sound in a 360° pattern, levels stay consistent even when the subject turns away from the mic.

A water-resistant mesh screen protects against humidity, perspiration, makeup, bad weather, and other potential on-location issues, while the durable cable is also moisture-resistant and built to stay soft and pliable, even after extended use. This version of the COS-11D terminates in a locking 3.5mm connector and is wired for use with Sony transmitters. A metal windscreen, holder clip, rubber mount, and plastic case are included.

Locking 3.5mm Connector
Compatible Wireless Transmitters
 • Sony: Works with Sony bodypack transmitters equipped with a locking 3.5mm connector, including the UWP-D and DWZ Series.
 • Also works with many third-party wireless transmitters and portable audio recorders that are equipped to supply 3 to 10 VDC through a locking 3.5mm connector wired for Sony compatibility.
Broadcast-Quality Sound and Dependable Performance
Subminiature Mic with a Big Sound
The camera-ready COS11-D features a subminiature capsule that enables the microphone to be inconspicuous and easily disguised in clothing or costumes. The unique vertical diaphragm design offers a clear and natural sound optimized for the human voice.
Normal Headroom for Standard Speech and Vocals
This version of the mic features a normal sensitivity setting for standard speech levels up to 123 dB SPL.
Omnidirectional Polar Pattern
The forgiving omnidirectional polar pattern picks up sound from all around the mic and provides a consistent frequency response, even for off-axis sound. This helps to supply clear, intelligible speech and vocals, even when the talent isn't speaking directly toward the microphone.
Tough, Water-Resistant Construction for Indoor/Outdoor Locations
The water-resistant front mesh screen provides reliable protection from perspiration and moisture, making the mic a solid performer in all kinds of weather. The rugged cable is also built to resist moisture and handling noise and stay pliable, even after repeated uses.

Sanken COS-11D Reviews

Lasted a good 3 months

Bought this mic to step up my audio game and while the sound quality is amazing, the construction quality is subpar. The connection point got loose and audio gets cut with tons of frequent static noise. Will file for warranty but this will be the last mic I purchase from Sanken.

Wow!

My favorite lav. Love the sound, low noise floor, and they are easy enough to hide. Perfect all around.

Great mic for hiding under clothing. Handles decibel spikes quite well, when combined with the Zoon F8N.

Great Mic, Collar Wrong

For years, I have been using COS-11D mics on actors for film. I am convinced it is the best lavalier microphone available. It is detailed and accurate, performing well across the entire frequency spectrum, including lows. Its personality is also a reasonably close match to the Schoeps MK41. It may not be the smallest, but it is small. Plenty of 3rd-party mounting accessories are available. This is the first one I have had in white. For some reason, the locking collar on this unit does not engage with my Sennheiser SK 500 G4 radios. It works fine on my SK 100 G3 radios, and also an MZA 900 P adapter I have.

Wow!

I bought this one. I have a question. If i connect sony transmitter this without phantom power, is it operating?
Asked by: Lee
The COS-11D requires 3 to 10V of plug-in power, not phantom power. Phantom power is higher voltage of 12 to 48V. The Sony transmitter will supply the proper amount of plug-in power needed for the COS-11D.

Is this compatible with the Rode Rodelink system?
Asked by: Chauncey
No, the Sony wiring of this mic is not compatible with the RodeLink. Here's a Sennheiser wired version of the COS-11D that would be compatible B&H # SAC11WNSETRB.

Asked by: Lee
This Sanken COS-11D is designed to work with a Sony wireless bodypack transmitter. The mic requires 3 to 10V plug-in power which will be supplied by the transmitter. It will work with the UWP-D11 and D21 wireless systems.

Can this be used with cellphones? like, can I connect it to the Note 9 for example and use it and microphone for vlogging?
Asked by: Sherif
This, I do not know but I highly doubt it. I say this because I tried using this on my friend's Sennheiser kit and it would not work; seems that this particular mic is designed for Sony UWP and that's it. Kinda disappointing, since it cost so much.

No, Im sorry let me re-ask my question - I already have a UWP system and want to up grade to a Sony UTX-B40 Wireless Bodypack Transmitter. For one, the UTX series has a dual receiver meaning they can take in 2 frequencies, etc, UWPs need individual receivers for each transmitter, but the UTS series too, use TRS mic inputs, just like the UWP series, which can take the Sanken Cos-11 lavs. What would happen if I connected the TRS connector from the Cos-11D into a Sony UTX-B40 Wireless Bodypack Transmitter? Is the Cos11D exclusively for UWP series TRS connectors? (and Sennheisers?
Asked by: Jimmy
This particular mic will work with the UTX-B40 transmitter. It will not work with Sennheiser.

would this also work on the Sony URX-P40 mic receiver?
Asked by: Jimmy
The URX-P40 is a receiver, so no, you would not connect a mic to it. It is compatible with the UWP series transmitters, which is compatible with URX-P40 receivers.
