Panasonic DMC-TS2 Overview

  • 1Description

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is a compact 14.1-Megapixel digital camera with a 28mm 4.6x optical zoom lens designed for people with an active lifestyle. The camera is waterproof to 33' (10m), shockproof to 6.6' (2m), freezeproof to 14°f (-10°c), and dustproof. This makes the camera perfect for beach going, swimming, skiing, climbing, hiking or any other outdoor activity, or tough environment. Setting the camera for the perfect photo is easy with Beach, Surf, Snow, & Sports modes.

The camera has features that allow you to capture all the high-speed action. The camera has a fast start-up time and short release time lag so you do not miss the shot, while Sonic Speed AF and Optical Image Stabilization will keep your images sharp. If the image is better captured in motion, the camera can take HD movies. If it is starting to get dark, the camera even has a built-in LED light for capturing video. All of these features make the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 the take-with-you-everywhere camera, no matter where you go or what you do.

14.1-Megapixel High-resolution CCD
The DMC-TS2 features a 1/2.33" CCD with effective 14.1-megapixel high-resolution.
Leica DC Lens with Folded Optics Technology
The DMC-TS2 features a high-quality Leica DC Vario-Elmar 28mm wide-angle lens with a 4.6x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 28-128mm). The folded optics of shaft guide method is adopted to secure the toughness of the lens unit. This lens unit comprises 10 elements and a prism unit in 8 groups, including 1 ED lens and 5 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, passing Leica's stringent standards to deliver exceptional optical performance to the edges. The DMC-TS2 is drop proof from a height up to 2.0m in accordance with the "MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5-Shock" test standard. In addition to reinforcing the exterior of the camera with shock-resistant material, the DMC-TS2 uses folded optics to prevent its lens unit from taking damage when dropped during operation. The lens unit is protected by a supplementary damper to absorb the force from shock impact. All components, including the lens unit, are designed to endure temperatures as low as -10 °C making the DMC-TS2 freezeproof.
28mm Wide-Angle Lens
The 28mm wide-angle lens lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances.
4.6x Optical Zoom, 6x Intelligent Zoom, 9.8x Extra Optical Zoom
Thanks to the newly incorporated Intelligent Resolution technology, the Intelligent Zoom feature is available with the DMC-TS2, extending the zoom ratio by approximately 1.3x and maintaining the picture quality even combining a digital zoom. This means the 4.6x optical can virtually extend to a 6x equivalent. Furthermore, the Extra Optical Zoom function extends zoom power to 9.8x by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer when shooting at 3-megapixel resolution.
With waterproof performance to a depth of 33' (10m), equivalent to the "IEC60529 IPX8" standard, the DMC-TS2 supports active shooting on a beach, underwater, or in a pool. If the camera gets dirty, soil and dust can be washed off by using water.
The DMC-TS2 is shockproof from a height up to 6.6' (2m) in accordance with the "MIL-STD 810F Method 516.5-Shock" test standard. It lets you shoot actively while moving around with the camera in one hand.
Freezeproof to 14°f (-10°c), the DMC-TS2 supports shooting while skiing, snowboarding or skating.
The DMC-TS2 is dustproof, equivalent to the "IEC60529 IP6X" standard. While hiking or playing sports, fine dust particles can enter through gaps in the camera body and cause malfunction. The DMC-TS2 can be used in these activities without problems.
Sealed Design and Included Silicon Jacket
If sand or other foreign matter becomes lodged in the rubber packing around the socket section or card/battery door, water can penetrate into the camera body and lead to a malfunction. The sealed body design of the DMC-TS2 prevents this, so you can use it safely at the beach or other sandy areas. The DMC-TS2 also comes bundled with a silicon jacket that prevents scratches.
Beach, Surf, Snow Mode & Sports Modes
The DMC-TS2 has 3 active outdoor scene modes - Beach & Surf, Snow, and Sports - that can be switched easily and quickly by turning the mode dial, ensuring that you don't miss sudden shooting opportunities. The Beach & Surf Mode is perfect for your beach activities, allowing you to use a single mode with optimized auto white balance both on the beach and in shallow water. To switch from still image shooting to motion image recording, simply press the Motion Picture Button. The camera selects the most suitable motion image scene mode to achieve a seamless transition from still to motion image recording.
Sonic Speed AF
The Sonic Speed AF system in the DMC-TS2 has a maximum speed of approx. 0.24 second (wide-end) / 0.28 second (tele-end) for auto focusing. It includes numerous re-engineering enhancements, including a higher-speed actuator, optimized algorithms and parallel software processing. The result is fast and accurate AF performance. You can quickly get moving subjects in focus, such as when you're shooting sports scenes.
Fast Start-Up Time
The previous linear processing program has been replaced with parallel processing to save 0.2 second off the start-up time. This has resulted in ultra-high-speed start-up of approximately 1.10 seconds.
Release Time Lag
The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.005 second, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities.
HD Movie in AVCHD Lite
In addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-TS2 can record high-definition motions images in AVCHD Lite. It features almost double the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format.
LED Light
The DMC-TS2 features an LED light that records beautiful motion images even in dusky underwater environments or at a nighttime camp. A convenient auto function also automatically turns on the LED when the ambient light becomes dim.
Scene Mode for Both Photos and Movies
The DMC-TS2, a hybrid still/motion image model, includes numerous Scene Modes for taking movies. Switching from still-image to movie shooting is seamless because the optimal Movie Scene Mode is automatically selected. The versatile Scene Mode range is a unique Lumix feature that handles just about any situation and subject type. By simply selecting a Scene Mode, the camera makes the optimal settings for you automatically, so anybody can take superb photos and movies with ease
2.7" 230,000-dot High-Resolution LCD
The DMC-TS2's large 2.7" LCD features a high 230,000-dot resolution, and a wide-viewing angle that lets you frame your shot in a variety of ways for both shooting and viewing. Lumix's acclaimed Intelligent LCD function also automatically adjusts the brightness in 11 steps according to shooting conditions. In addition, the AR (anti-reflective) coating LCD minimizes glare and provides clear images, for high visibility even in outdoor brightness. This LCD provides sharp, clear images in virtually all shooting situations, ranging from nighttime to bright daylight scenes and from low-angle to high-angle shooting. And, it lets you share the fun of viewing images with family and friends.
Extended Battery Life
The energy-saving Venus Engine HD II image processing engine and the efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery - which has been slimmed down to fit into thinner camera bodies - work together to extend the shooting time of the DMC-TS2. This lets users take approximately 360 shots on a single battery charge.
3 Aspect Ratios
The aspect ratio for the DMC-TS2 can be easily selected from 16:9 wide, 3:2 and conventional 4:3 to shoot in the framing aspect that best suits the photo's composition or purpose of use. The 16:9 ratio gives images that match the aspect ratio of an HDTV screen.
The DMC-TS2 can play a slideshow with music. Choose from 4 types of music: Natural, Slow, Swing and Urban. Then, select the transition effect to match your music. You can also use the optional RP-CDHM15/CDHM30 mini HDMI cable to connect the camera to an HDTV for breathtaking, large-screen viewing. For musical slideshows created with the included PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.0 HD Edition, you can choose your favorite iTunes music file as background music and burn it onto a DVD disc as a MPEG2 file. It is also possible to upload the slideshow to YouTube.
Title Edit / Text Stamp
The Title Edit function in the playback mode lets you edit the titles of any photos you want. You can also enter your destination and travel date into the Travel Mode in advance, or enter the birth date and name of your subject in the Baby Mode or Pet Mode. The title, date of travel information, name, age based on the birth date, and date of shooting are displayed during playback, and can be printed on photos.
The Clipboard function is incredibly handy for the maps and time schedules that are so important when traveling. By snapping photos of them and adding them to the clipboard, you can retrieve them instantly with the Mode Dial. Because it takes a little time to retrieve images from an SD/SDHC/SDXC Memory Card, the images are stored in their own special folders in the built-in memory.
PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.0 HD Edition
The latest version of exciting software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.0 HD Edition comes bundled with the DMC-TS2. With quick start-up and fast read-in of images, the PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.0 HD Edition makes it possible to sort and organize photos not only of those newly taken but also of those stored in your computer. The Face Recognition function recognizes the faces in the image to automatically sort the photos by the registered faces, without necessitating picking out each photo one by one when you only want images of a specific person. You can also enjoy slideshows with a variety of effects and use your iTunes music library as background music and burn it onto a DVD disc in MPEG2. Motion images can be uploaded directly to YouTube using the built-in YouTube uploader even in HD (High Definition) quality. It also lets you create a 360-degree rotation panorama file in MOV, which is especially easy if Panorama Assist Mode in the camera is used. The software is of course compatible with the Windows 7. Experience and feel the outstanding benefits of the PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.0 HD Edition. It will allow you to view, edit and archive your captured photos and motion images with greater ease and fun.

    Panasonic DMC-TS2 Reviews

Lumix DMC-TS2 Digital Camera (Silver) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 287.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Performer I bought this specifically to go on a fishing trip. I was around and in the water and on hiking trails all week. This camera went in my pocket and traveled everywhere with me. I know it was submerged at least a couple times and took some bumps too. Worked without issue. The battery life was great - about 260 pictures and charged fast. The pricing at B&H was well below others and they were one of the few retailers that had it available. Very easy to use and had 0 lag, so i didn't miss a shot. It is a bit thick and beefy, but that should be didnt detract from my overall feelings for this device. I also like the silicone case that comes with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little camera; works as advertised I use this for nature photography while kayaking and for taking pictures of family/friends at the beach, in the pool, and places where I don't want to lug my Nikon DSLR and lens(es). So far, I've used it underwater in a pool and no problems with leaks; the pictures are great. Above-water, it takes commendable pictures and the shutter lag is minimal. Image quality seems quite good. The only criticism I can think of is that the zoom toggle and shutter release are both on top and close to each other - gets confusing. However, this is easlily learned and a minor design flaw given the otherwise excellent performance of the camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not sure about its seaworthiness The camera is a great all around pocket camera. It fits in all but my tightest jeans pockets. The images are as good as can be expected from a point and shoot camera. But, I have doubts about its seaworthiness. Even for snorkeling. I have only been in the ocean three times with it. And, yesterday - it definitely showed signs of condensation behind the LCD. This does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling. Underwater image quality is good. Point and shoot good. Not DSLR with external lights good. And... video is very good both in and out of the water. I would recommend this camera to a friend. But, as of now I can not recommend it for snorkeling or diving.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the competition I've gone through the pentax Ws and the Olympus Toughs. The TS2 has superior image quality and functionality. I'm very impressed. For point and shoots, why buy anything else when you can get an indestructible and waterproof camera that takes quality photos everywhere?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera I recently got this camera so I have not been able to try out everything, but so far I really like it. It takes really good pictures once you figure out which settings you want. I really like the intelligent auto option and that is what I have mine set at. Since I just got it, I haven't been able to try it under water, but hopefully when I do nothing goes wrong and it continues to work good. Overall I really like this camera because it doesn't have an extending lens (which is how my last camera broke when I dropped it accidentally, pushing the lens back into the camera) also it takes good pictures and is a durable camera that I hope will last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bear camera on the market I just got back home from a week long raft trip down a 90 mile river here in southwest Alaska. I took my brand new Lumix TS2 with me. I never worried about it getting wet. I actually was more concerned about the 23 brown bears that we counted in the first 35 miles of the river. Got some great photos and video of those encounters. The quality of the camera is outstanding and I haven't even learned all it can do yet. I literally took it out of the box, charged the batteries, put the card in it, got on the plane, and began my adventure. I wouldn't leave home without it. Next attempt will be video taping a rainbow trout caught on a fly underwater. This camera is truly a fisherman's friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great camera I bought this camera before going on vacation near Cape Hatteras, NC. I used it to take photos on the beach, in the surf, and on the kayak while fishing. It worked great. The silicone jacket is great for protecting the camera and preventing it from sliding around. It is an inconvenience when it comes time to rinse off the camera and access the ports or battery, but one that I feel is worth it for the protection it offers. Photo quality is very good, video quality is great, and the one-touch video recording was appreciated while I was trying to paddle my kayak and keep up with my wife as a 4' shark pulled her around on her kayak while we were fishing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Its ok I have had several Canon Power shots and still have one and bought this for damp or dusty areas for doing home inspections. The camera takes decent photos but once in a while it says its focused and is not. It has a slow response time (long lag), the quality and color do not meet the power shot. If canon had a comparable one for water and dust I would go with it, until then this one will do. Its holding up well with the environments I am in which the Canons were not. the focus is a roll of the dice at times. the battery life seems pretty short. I bought an underwater housing for my power shot and that is superior under water.
