Panasonic HDC-HS700 Overview

  • 1Description

Panasonic's HDC-HS700K High Definition Camcorder has a number of high quality features and functions packed into a camcorder designed for the consumer market. The HS700 captures 1080/60p HD video footage and is capable of taking still photos up to 14.2MP in size. Video or still images are stored to the camera's immense 240GB hard disk drive (HDD) and additional footage can be captured to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.

At the heart of the HDC-HS700K you'll find Panasonic's 3 MOS image sensor. This CMOS sensor provides a total of 9.15MP (3 x 3.05MP) for capturing stunning footage. The sensor works together with the camera's Leica Dicomar lens, 18x Intelligent Zoom, and 3" LCD to get the most of each and every shot. Other respectable features of the camera include Power O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) and microphone and headphone connections. In addition, a cold shoe provides on-camera mounting of lights or microphones and a remote enables hands-free operation.

High-Density 1080/60p Recording
The HDC-HS700 uses the progressive method to record twice as much image data as the interlace method. Interlacing requires two images to produce a complete picture, while the progressive method records a single image as a complete picture. And, the 60 Progressive Recording of the HDC-HS700 produces 60 images per second. This extremely dense image information creates intricate detail and silky smooth motion. Even when subjects move quickly, afterimages are minimized to create more natural footage. The progressive method is most effective when shooting detailed designs where moire patterns tend to occur, or when capturing scenes during sports events where the subjects are in constant motion. Also, the recorded images are displayed clearly even when they are made into still images, so it is possible to preserve stunning photos when clipping them from videos
240GB Hard Disk Drive and Flash Memory Storage
The HDC-HS700K has a generous 240GB hard disk drive (HDD) for storing hours upon hours of your HD video and still images. The camera also records to optional SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards as well for even more storage and easy transfer of files
3 MOS Image Sensor
Panasonic's 3 MOS image sensor has a total of 9.15MP (3 x 3.05MP) for capturing stunning 1920 x 1080p high definition video and up to 14.2MP still images
Leica Dicomar Lens
Panasonic HD camcorders use Leica Dicomar lenses, which are renowned for their ability to render sharp images and excellent shading. They also suppress ghosting, flare, and distortion at the image edges. Even in strong sunlight, these superb lenses maintain high contrast and resolution. A bright new F1.5-F2.8 lens with a 46mm filter diameter has been created for the HDC-TM700. Efficient light collection allows the new lens to capture bright, clear images even in dim lighting or at high shutter speeds. This high-end lens brings out all the beauty of Full-HD images
35mm Wide-Angle Capture
The 35mm wide-angle lens on the HDC-HS700 fits more people and more of the background into the frame than a conventional 44.9mm lens. This is especially handy when you want to take a group photo in a small room
3" LCD Display
Record and review your footage with the generous 3" LCD display; an included stylus helps you navigate the touch screen menu options with ease
18x Intelligent Zoom
The HDC-HS700 features a 12x optical zoom and an Intelligent Zoom function that goes all the way up to 18x. When using Intelligent Zoom, Intelligent Resolution Technology lets you shoot at high zoom rates while preserving image sharpness. You get crisp images of highly detailed objects - without the blurry edges
Up to 14.2MP Still Image Capture
Capture brilliant still images up to 14.2MP in size when shooting in the 3:2 aspect ratio. When shooting in 16:9, otherwise known as wide angle, the HDC-HS700 is capable of taking up to 13.3MP photos. And in 4:3, the standard imaging size, the camera can capture up to 12.2MP photos

    Panasonic HDC-HS700 Reviews

HDC-HS700K High Definition Camcorder is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome I do a lot of filming backcountry sled/skiing and in the park and this camera works perfect. Super easy to use, good image stabilizer (necessary after hoppin off ur sled and tryin to film or after comin off a huge adrenaline rush hucking a 50 footer). Picture quality is awesome, size is good for packing in a backpack. Basically its the camera you want if you dont want to buy a big professional camera for a couple thousand more $$. I ended up going with panasonic, because my last camera was similar to this one, it was 3ccd and that worked so well for years. only thing im not stoked on is the no firewire output, and no manual focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small camcorder, Packed with power Bought this unit for travel on Alaska cruise. While at home I read the info, well structured, charged the battery and started shooting. It's very small in the hand, but has loads of power. The zoom works great in video, but only goes to 18x for stills. Glad I ordered an extra battery because in a little less than 2 hrs. the battery level was under a third. Downloaded the stills and enlarged without a problem. Long range and close up shots all looked great. I will be able to take over 1000 stills and 6 hours of video using the built in hard drive. Thanks B&H for the great price...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WoW !! This is by far the best camcorder I have owned. The color is beautiful and it was fairly easy to learn how to use it. I used it to record my son's indoor soccer game last week in a school gym, and was startled on how great the results were. Used the camera to shoot stills while recording and I was very pleased with the results. Battery life really isn't bad but don't skimp and buy a spare. I got the camera when it went on sale for under $800 at B&H several weeks ago so this only made my whole experience even better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera, I'd buy it again! Great camcorder that works well in low light. It isn't perfect and the white balance isn't always spot on but it is good. I think the extra storage of the hard drive is worth some price differential from the HDC-TM700K I was also considering. I used this for my new daughter and I'm happy with the 60P video. You can always convert it to an easier to edit format using the image processing chip in the camera until editing software catches up. I was concerned about this before the purchase but it is a non-issue. The fan noise is a non-issue. You can work and try to hear it but I don't notice it in video shot in a silent room.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good Purchased this camcorder for an upcoming family gathering. I've used it only once so far to record a professional rodeo. Previous camcorder was Sony DVD camcorder. Very easy to use, touch screen was easier to use and more responsive than expected. Picked up audio very well. Was most interested in HD feature. Biggest complaint is that for one of the most expensive cameras in its class, it does not come with an HDMI to TV cable. I found one for about $4.00 on-line. After receipt of HDMI cable, compared it to AV connection and HDMI quality is impressive. At 1.5 hours, battery lasted 30 min. longer than specified.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Affordable pro quality video I am a professional ENG(electronic news gathering) editor but I bought this camera mainly for personal use. The image quality that this camera produces is so close to the cameras we use at work that it's almost scary. I've used it to shoot a couple of bands at the North By Northeast music festival. These bands were outdoors at night on a spotlit stage and the camera worked really well in iA mode. The built in mic's audio quality was quite high also. I'll probably use it for some future feelance work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Performance This camera is a bargin at a little over 1K. The 1080 60P video is unmatched by any video I've ever seen. The controls are intuitive to use and the manual control gives the shooter a lot of range to customize the shot. The zoom range is also exceptional! I feel no need at all for a wide or telephoto add on lens as the factory supplied Leica lens impressively covers a wide range for all but the most extreme uses. I am a former Sony VX2100 owner. That camera was ans is considered the king of low light video. Let me tell you the the Panasonic HS700 blows the VX2100 out of the water in all but the lowest practicle low light situations. The color strength and clarity (Noise) in low light situations was the biggest suprise for me. Don't spend 3-4X the money on one of the so called professional models, unless you absolutely need the XLR Mic inputs and the Looks of the larger Professional series cameras. This cameras excells at what is most important Picture Quality. Anything negitive to say? not really. Sure, the LCD could be better but its fine. The color View finder is grainy but usable. The included software makes transfering your video to your computer and or DVD disc very easy. Again, if video quality is 1st priority, then this is the camera you want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good camcorder - recommended! I bought this camera two weeks ago. Captures videos inside and outside in AVCHD and 1080 60p. The quality is outstanding. I used to own Sony DV and it's embarrassing to make a comparison. The stabilization is great. The colors during the day are spectacular. A thing that bothered me first was the fan noise, but the more I looked at it, and the more I recorded - it's not an issue at all. Sound capture is really good. Before I purchased this camera, I did countless hours of research. I was deciding between this camera and Sony HDR-XR550. The big advantage of Panasonic is the 1080p60 mode. I'm glad that I bought this camera and strongly recommend to others. We are getting ready to do a road trip to CA and can't wait to use this camcorder.
