Tiffen 72DIGEK3 overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 72mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit contains all the basics that an outdoor digital shooter requires.

UV Protector
These are wise initial investments. They help protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

Circular Polarizer
Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

Neutral Density
Neutral Density filters from Tiffen have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the either the sensor of a digital camera or the film plane of a traditional film camera. Neutral Density filters are used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since they allow the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And since they can also help to control your depth of field, they permit you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, their value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The entire kit comes with a Tiffen padded storage pouch that will help keep your filters clean and free from dust, dirt, fingerprints and other contaminants,.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

UV Protector

Tiffen filters provide additional benefits of correction for Ultraviolet(UV) light which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details
If desired they can be left on the lens at all times for protection

Circular Polarizer

This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays to remove haze from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Makes a blue sky bluer
Enhances clouds

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Tiffen Quality
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two optical glass sheets. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process
Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly makes its filters in the USA and backs up its products with a solid 10-year warranty

    Tiffen 72DIGEK3 reviews

72mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filters at any Price I use this set on a Nikon D300 with an 18-200 zoom. I've used all three filters extensively: the polarizer for most outdoor shots; the UV for lower-light situations; and I've had some great shots of waterfalls and fast-flowing rivers with the ND. (Incidentally, the 0.6 is great choice for a single ND, but I also carry a 1.2 for when I want to really slow down a shot.) I checked the quality with comparison shots on a tripod with and without each filter installed. All filters produced excellent results. The storage case is well constructed and provides good protection.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good started filter kit I bought this filter kit to go with my Nikon D7000 and 18-200 VR lens. Initially, I was happy with the kit and it seemed to meet my needs. However after a trip to Lake Tahoe, I took a few pictures that had significant ghosting with the tiffen UV filter. I also used the CP on the trip and had no issues with the pictures with that filter on. I was able to take some great snow covered mountain pics that turned out beautiful. Since then I return the kit and sprang for the Hoya Super HMC UV filter and the Hoya Digital CP for about the same amount of money. Obviously, I am lacking the neutral density filter, but I can get that later. I can honestly say, there is a huge difference in quality between the Hoya and Tiffen. This kit is still good for basic lens protection, but if you truly want a quality UV filter, go with a good multi coated filter instead. You will be happier in the long run.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Questionable Background: I shoot up to 20k frames per year. Been using 52mm filter on D60 and D7000. Just bought 18-200 to replace two separate lenses, and this kit to go with. ND filter - haven't used yet. cir-PL - boy.. adds obvious haze/blur to my photos. Never saw this on my 52mm filters.. any of them. UV - bent, had to mail back for replacement. Also either this or my lens caused a strange circular pattern on couple photos - rings. Happened while photographing northern lights once.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Filter Kit with case is a winner! Bought the kit with my first DSLR and I am glad I did. The case is great, and will hold up to four filters in a case that fits in all but the smallest camera bags. I have the UV permanently on the camera, and then use the others as required. Since the case can hold four, there is room for two more since I keep the UV on the camera. I have not tried the other filters extensively yet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy this product, again. I use my camera for very basic, general-fun kind of events and as I'm wandering through life. The filters are great: they make the pictures warmer, deeper, and more fun to review. Not being more professional, I can't offer that kind of advice, but from what I've been told, very talented friends of mine love them, too. Good product, especially for the money. Thanks! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Basic Kit I bought a new lens and suddenly realized I didn't have a basic filter set - and since this brand worked with my 55mm I saw no reason why it wouldn't with this one. As with the other, everything works fine out of the box. No problems attaching to the lens. Quality of the glass is excellent and the results are worth the effort. Good buy for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3 for 1! I was looking at just the Tiffen Polarized filter in a camera shop, and would have paid the price I paid for all 3 filters in this kit on B&H! So glad I waited patiently and ordered from this site! B&H is by far the best site to order camera's and gear off of! These filters are great also, I have the UV Protector on my Canon Rebel Xsi at all times now!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for all-around hobbyist If you're a hobbyist, and you really want bang for your buck, this lens is great. However, if you really want to get technical, this isn't the best lens all-around. It's slow and I've had some problems focusing at what should be decent distances. I've also noticed that the shutter has locked itself a few times. Weird. I have to turn off the camera to release the shutter and turn it back on again. I've had the lens for five months now and have used it non-stop so I can get a good feel for how it works. I'm still giving it four stars because it does do what I want it to. I take lots of pictures of my kids and when you don't have the time to run across the playground to capture a moment, the 200 zoom option is great. Regarding the lens creep, I have the gold VR version and the lens DOES STILL CREEP! However, I keep it in a neoprene cover whenever I'm not using it and the locking system seems to work fine so it's not too annoying.
