Tiffen 77DIGEK3 Overview

  • 1Description
  • 2UV Protector
  • 3Circular Polarizer
  • 4Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

The Tiffen 77mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit contains all the basics that an outdoor digital shooter requires.

UV Protector
These are wise initial investments. They help protect your valuable investment from dust, moisture and scratches, which can lead to costly repairs.

Circular Polarizer
Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

Neutral Density
Neutral Density filters from Tiffen have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the either the sensor of a digital camera or the film plane of a traditional film camera. Neutral Density filters are used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Since they allow the use of slower shutter speeds in bright light, it becomes possible to create these special effects that would normally not be possible to capture without the filter. And since they can also help to control your depth of field, they permit you to shoot at wider apertures. Ultimately, their value is in helping to prevent bright, overly washed out images shot in bright light.

The entire kit comes with a Tiffen padded storage pouch that will help keep your filters clean and free from dust, dirt, fingerprints and other contaminants,.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

UV Protector
Tiffen filters provide additional benefits of correction for Ultraviolet(UV) light which can register on film and videotape as a bluish cast and can obscure distant details
If desired they can be left on the lens at all times for protection
Circular Polarizer
This filter eliminates ultraviolet rays to remove haze from outdoor shots as well as polarizing the light to remove reflections, and increase color saturation, without affecting the overall color balance
Makes a blue sky bluer
Enhances clouds
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed ISOs, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Tiffen Quality
Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two optical glass sheets. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process

All 3 filters work as advertised. Getting the included storage pouch made this a worthwhile investment.

Ive been shooting tv new professionally for 22 years and have always had a Tiffen filter on the front for protection.  Picked up this kit after purchasing a new mirrorless camera for street and landscape photography and wanted a basic cover your bases kit and this one does the trick.  I keep the UV filter on all the time for protection and just add the ND when Im shooting in bright daylight. On a side note, I just purchased the kit and BH emailed me to leave a review.  I noticed the price is now CHEAPER than what I paid for it.  :(

it is OK

The ND and UV filters are good, and my only exception with the circular polarizer is that the movement is very tight, and causes the filter to come unscrewed if backing up the polarization. It may loosen up over time, but this is my first impression.

Delaminated ND filter

Mi kit (77 mm Digital essentials filter kit) came with a defective ND filter. It is partially delaminated around the edges. Never had this issue with any Tiffen filters before until I got this kit . Mi rating of 2 stars is for the one filter. Aside from that I'd give tiffen at least 4 stars in general. B+W filters are reputably way better but cost a lot more and I'm not sure anyone would notice different results worth paying so much for!!

Can all 3 filters in the Tiffen 77mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit be used simultaneously?

Yes, you can stack filters but if you have a relatively wide angle lens, you may get vignetting.

does this kit cut IR?

The Tiffen 77mm Digital Essentials Filter Kit (B&H# TIDEFK77) contains three filters: UV Protector Filter, Circular Polarizer Filter, and Neutral Density 0.6 Filter. None of those is an IR filter nor is rated for IR attenuation. You would presumably want an IRND filter for that.

Will this fit on a Nikon D80?

This filter kit will work on any lens which takes 77mm filters. Please refer to the specifications for your cameras lens to determine the filter size, most lenses have the filter size/diameter marked on them as well.

Is the glass normal thickness or thinner? I will be using on a wide-angle lens (16mm) and don't want vignetting.
Asked by: arindam m.
Unfortunately, at a wide angle (in my case 18mm at cropped sensor camera) there is vignetting.
