Promote Systems GPS-N90 overview

  • 1Description

The Promote GPS-90 from Promote Systems is for select Nikon DSLR cameras. This device mounts to your camera's hot shoe and lets you benefit from GPS technology to pinpoint the precise location from which a photograph is taken. This technology called "geotagging" embeds geographic information into a photograph along with the time and date stamp.

The Promote GPS-90 Receiver features the SiRF Star III chip, which allows acquiring and maintaining a GPS signal lock. The GPS is powered from the camera and it will automatically power up and down along with camera exposure meter, allowing for further saving of the camera battery power.

The GPS-90 provides immediate geotagging...no computer processing required
The GPS unit consumes less than 55mA from the camera, making it one of the most power-efficient GPS receivers available for compatible Nikon DSLR cameras.

    Promote Systems GPS-N90 reviews

Promote GPS-90 is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did Not work for me I have a Nikon D90. This is the GPS that is supposed to be for this camera. The directions are easy to follow. But I could not get it to work for me. I live in a spot where there is lots of visible sky. Very few buildings high enough to block reception. It is supposed to show a blinking GPS when it trying to acquire a signal, and go to a non-blinking one when it has locked on. I was surprised how quickly it started blinking when I took it outside, and then how quickly it displayed the non-blinking GPS. But as soon as I would touch the shutter button, the GPS sign went off, no GPS data recorded, and the unit would have to be switched off and on again to restart the process. After repeating many times, it never worked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PROMOTE GPS-90 I PURCHASED THIS PROMOTE GPS-90, FOR SEVERAL REASONS. FIRSTLY ITS SMALL FOOTPRINT, MOUNTS ON THE HOT SHOE OF YOUR CAMERA. SECONDLY, ITS VERY ACCURATE DOWN TO THE SINGLE DEREE AND MJNUTE. I DO ALOT OF HIKING BACK TRAILS AND PATHS TO DO LANDSCAPE AND NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY, AND MY LOCATION IS IMPORTANT TO ME AT ALL TIMES FOR FUTURE EXCURSIONS,TRIPS. THERE IS ONLY ONE MINOR DRAWBACK TO THE UNIT ITS POWER USAGE IS VERY DRAINING, IT IS BEST TO CARRY SEVERAL EXTRA BATTERIES WITH YOU AS TO THE UNIT DRAWS ALOT OF POWER FROM THE BATTERY. IF YOU NEED A FLASH OR YOUR CAMERA NEEDS EXTRA LIGHTING YOU WILL FIND THAT HAVING THE UNIT ON YOUR HOT SHOE WILL DISABLE THE FLASH COMPLETLY. OTHER THAN THESE ITEMS I MENTIONED I REALLY LIKE THIS UNIT IS ONE TO HAVE. THANK YOU, MARK L ANDREWS

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy set up and it appears to work. Took it out of the box, read the brief instructions and within a couple of minutes it was working. When moving locations after using the GPS and shutting down the camera, you should power on the camera and wait 3-4 minutes before shooting. This will let the GPS acquire its new location. If you fail to do this the first few photos may not have GPS data because the GPS has not acquired the new location yet. I use a Mac and Apple's Photos for Mac app, the GPS meta data imported perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product, Poor documentation I was taking a trip to rural areas of Poland and wanted to geo-tag my photos. This unit was much less expensive than the Nikon GPS unit for my Nikon D7100. The unit worked fine, once I figured out the proper camera settings. The product documentation was unclear, and it did not provide settings for my Nikon. Battery drain was substantial, but not a major problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GPS Ordered the Promoted GPS for my D90 to assist in documenting locations on a planned trip. Tested it as soon as it was received and found it easy to install and GPS connected quickly. In Peru it took a little longer to connect and a couple of times it did not connect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review Update I'm writing this to update my previous review. I had the camera and GPS unit on yesterday for 4 hours continuously as I hiked around a state park. The battery drain was not significant. The battery was down only one bar. What was different is that I enabled the standby timer in the GPS setting of my D7100 camera. This didn't affect the acquisition time fo the GPS at all. The slight delay was no longer than it took me to frame a shot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good solid device It took a little while to find the satellites, but then worked well. Only negative is that it takes up the hotshoe.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy Setup Just got it yesterday evening so haven't done much with it other than operate it in back yard and on back porch. I put it on the camera, a D7100, turned on the switch and turned on the camera. I also went into the camera menu to make sure GPS was enabled. I chose not to enable the automatic time update from GPS which one can do with the D7100. Getting the correct local time automatically into the camera can be useful when traveling. Warning: I haven't tested this capability yet with the D7100. The GPS information shows lat, lon, elevation and UTC time on the camera back over the picture when the multi-selector is toggled. The GPS-90 took about the same time to acquire satellite signals as a portable hand held GPS. The major downside I see with this unit is the fairly rapid battery drain. I will have to carry extra batteries or get a battery grip when shooting in the field for any length of time. I knew from other reviewers that battery drain would be an issue so this was not unexpected. If it had better battery performance I would give it 5 stars.
