Offering style, elegance, and the optical performance you would expect from Leica, the Monovid 8x20 Monocular brings distant subjects in close and reveals the tiny details of nearby objects. Whether you're scoping a performer on stage, glassing the treeline for the Lord God bird, or investigating the intricate subtleties of a Nautilus shell – you'll be glad you didn't leave home without it.

The Monovid's 8x optical system features a phase-corrected roof prism and lenses with HDC and AquaDura coatings, to maximize light transmission and deliver a bright, sharp image. Inside the Monovid's cylindrical leather carry case there's a special pocket for a very special attachment – a close-up lens that allows 8x magnification at distances as close as 9.8". Its aluminum housing is nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging in any climate, and it is sufficiently watertight to withstand being submerged to a depth of more than 16 feet with no ill effects.

Monovid 8x20 Monocular (Red) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Portable Leica The Leica monocular does not replace either of my Leica Televids or Leica Binoculars. What it does is give me a very portable, discreet magnifying device for viewing far and near objects. Typical Leica quality in construction and performance. Objective lens diameter is limiting, but still very serviceable. I find that a braced two elbow posture provides a stable enough base to get a good steady view. The focusing mechanism is stiff, hopefully will wear into a smoother action as time goes on. The near focus lens is awesome as I have expanded my birding activities to include insects and flora. All in all I am thoroughly pleased with my purchase and expect to see things I would have missed as I expect to be able to carry this lens at times when my binos and scopes would have been left behind. I purchased the longer neck cord, but in reality the provided cord should be enough for most. The case can be worn on a belt also, making it doubly convenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Monovid 8 x 20 Monocular (Red) by Leica Some years ago, a friend got a pair of Leica Binoculars, 8 x 42, Trinovid and I had the pleasure of viewing birds with them. The optics were excellent. My girlfriend was put off by the weight of the binoculars and the prescription between her left and right eyes made it difficult for her to use binoculars. Enter the Monovid 8 x 20 Monocular (Red) by Leica. This wonderful small telescope, which is what it really is, although it has much less power than a refractor telescope of astronomical size, is ideal for viewing birds at close and to some extent even distant ranges. But power isn't everything and if you study the science of quality optics, you will find this truism in a number of sources. It is also small enough she can put it in her purse and use it at concerts, plays and sporting events. The quality of the glass is so good that it is much brighter than most other binoculars I have seen, and it also showed no discernible vignetting. Vignetting, for those who don't know what it is, is where there appears to be a shadow the further from the center one looks through optical instruments like a camera lens or a telescope or binoculars. If you take the time to study the basic principles of optics, there is a lot to learn about quality optical design. I believe anyone can benefit from such study. Take a look at close focus measurements. The 6 foot close focus measurement, about 1.8 m is very good considering viewing birds at close range or insects. From about 50 yards we were able to see alligators in the wild at a safe range and larger birds, like Wood Storks and Great Egrets while also being able to see Summer Tanagers migrating back to the U.S. in late winter, early spring. I was told I did very well in getting this wonderful device. So for guys like me, I would suggest that for our ladies, it might behoove us to select such an instrument that's easier to carry, and to avoid shaky images from hand shake, and first ask our ladies what would be their preferences. Suffice it to say, my lady said You scored big. As for cons, I seriously can't think of any. This is a monocular and it is not as powerful as a set of 7 x 50 binoculars, but then it does not have the shaky image that binoculars of that size and magnitude that go with optics of that weight. And guys, in my opinion, this is the kind of optical equipment we might like to have simply because of its portability when in the field or just being out and about. The engineering is super and I don't think you can go wrong with this device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing visual clarity Expensive. But work every penny! Better clarity and image than my full sized spotting scope. Using this as a SAR tool so weight, function and performance are critical. Very happy with the product!
