The Formatt 86mm Hot Mirror/Neutral Density (ND) 2.4 HD Filter has been specially formulated resulting from extensive research into the applications of molecular A.C.T. dyes (Absorption Cell Technology). This unique filter gives more of a neutral gray look without the specular effects that you see in current neutral density and graduated neutral density filters - thereby allowing you more precise control.

Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.

Formatt Hot Mirror Filters - Some digital still cameras can have increased sensitivity to infrared light that may cause color rendition problems. The Formatt Standard Hot Mirror Filter is designed to remedy this problem by reflecting most infrared light.

HD technology has been targeted towards today's cinema and videographer who are using the latest ultra-sharp cameras and lenses.

Formatt, a company with three generations of professional filter-making experience produces every filter to the highest technical standards. The finest materials, together with state of-the-art production technology have resulted in a standard of optical excellence unmatched anywhere else.

Formatt's HD Neutral Density solid and graduated filters are available in all the popular round screw-in sizes, all the standard square sizes
All Formatt filters are finished with a unique edge frame offering maximum protection against chipping, surface scratches and enables easy handling and cleaning
With the filter description on top of the frame it also makes identification of the filter much easier especially when filters are stored in cases on location
Formatt HD Neutral Density filters have the same densities and light stops as the Kodak Wratten Standards
Formatt's Neutral Density Filters are a response to the many DPs and cinematographers who find that it is important to shoot as wide open as possible to minimize depth of field, especially with HD

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO by 1/2)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO by 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO by 1/8)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO by 1/16)

86mm Hot Mirror/Neutral Density (ND) 2.4 Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Good Stuff Previously had a great experience from a regular 1.8 Formatt ND filter but wasn't sure what to expect from this purchase. What I found with this 2.4, again, was that the definition was very good which I simply check by comparing shots with and without it at 200mm. Things retain a nice sharpness, not perfect but close enough. The main affect the hot mirror has is helping the camera use it's auto temp setting to adjust to very close to spot on every shot something regular NDs leave at the extreme cool end. Balancing the tint in an image with editing software is much easier using the hot mirror. Fantastic! One thing I was hoping to do is have the option to combine it with a regular 1.8 ND filter from Formatt to get 14 stops. This was probably never the intention of this style filter and only something I desired. Well, it works and one can get good sharpness but the images turn out a crazy crazy red tint. Nothing I do in camera removes it and placing UVs between them, before them or after them hasn't resolved it. However, in post processing one can overcome the tint. There is just enough room left in the temp and tint sliders to pull it back to normal, adjusting from a RAW file in software. Phew! Something worth noting, mathematically, setting my camera to compensate for the longer exposure needed, it is always better to do the calc with 7.3 stops instead of 8. No big deal to me. For use within design parameters it is fantastic. I am very happy with it.
