    G-Technology mini reviews

    G-DRIVE mini High-Speed Portable Drive (500GB) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 156.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mistake, do not buy! I bought this for the sole purpose of editing video on my MacBook Pro. Come to find out, you cannot connect a firewire camera to this drive! Connecting a camera unmounts the drive. G-tech claims they know this, but the other firewire port is ONLY for connecting another hard drive. The problem is, that ALL new iMac's and MacBook Pro's have ONE firewire port. In other words, it's impossible to use this as a firewire connected scratch disk/capture drive. I asked them if I could trade this drive for a regular G-Drive which they said has a different chipset and doesn't have this problem. They said no. I use the same camera daisy chained off my Drobo without any problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Video & Photography Library I'm a photographer who just recently got into video. I'm using a Canon 5D Mark II along with a Macbook Pro 17 The G-Drive Mini is super fast and reliable. I've used G-Drives in the past and was satisfied with their performance. I got the G-Drive Mini because it was small but sported dual firewire 800 and a USB 2.0 port. It comes with a really nice leather case and 3 cables for 800, 400, 2.0. Bus powered so you don't need to carry any extra AC adapters. Overall it's an attractive portable drive with the right amount of connectivity and fast. Wish they had a terabyte version but I'm sure that's down the pike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Notch I use the drive to back up my iMac's internal hard drive. I bought it to replace a LaCie Little Disk that was consistently troublesome from day of installation till it failed three years later. The G-Drive Mini was easy to install and, so far, has been trouble-free. I emailed tech support with a question and quickly got an intelligent, relevant response. That's a lot more than I can say for LaCie's tech support. I particularly like the fact that the G-Drive Mini has an on-off switch. A little glitch: In the documentation on the CD that comes with the product, the FireWire ports are labeled 400 and 800. On the product itself, they're both labeled 800.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Drive So Far I needed a drive to backup my files on my family's computer, and wanted something that would be small and out of the way since the office area is rather small. This hard drive fit the bill perfectly. So far I haven't had any issues. It comes with a little carry case which in my case is good for when I have to store it somewhere so it doesn't get too dusty. That said if I wanted to take it somewhere it would fit perfectly in my purse. Even though the drive gets its powered from the computer it's plugged into, there is a DC IN +12V slot if you want to power it using external power. (the AC adapter is not included)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Portable Drive Probably the best purchase I have ever made for portable hard drive. I bought 2, they are small, light, fast, silent and the cooling technology is simply awesome. Failure in most hard drive is due to heat and adding a cooling feature shows are skilled G-Drive engineers are and how much they understand the technology they sell. I use my G-drive them as backup disks and I cannot recommend G-Drive enough. Just read the reviews about the company and their products, they are just above everything else. Not to mention that those disks are price very well. Simply the best portable disks on the market right now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reliable Hardware I use the G-DRIVE mini High-Speed Portable Drive to store video files for my theatre production company. So far it has worked beautifully. When I bought it, the sales associate told me I would be able to format the device for use with BOTH Macs & PCs which would be great since my company uses both, but my video editors couldn't figure out how to format it that way, so now it is ONLY compatible with Macs. The product DOES come with instructions for formatting the device exclusively for PCs but does NOT contain instructions for formatting it for both PCs and Macs. That's the only thing it's missing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well done! Easy to use, small and stylish. Came with a very nice leather travel case and 3 cables including a FireWire 800-400!!! Runs off phantom power from USB or FireWire but also has a power connection, but does not come with AC power cable. On/off switch on back of unit means that it had to be powered up to show up on desktop so not 100% plug and play. Wish it came in a larger capacity at the same physical size. But a great value when consider all the extras that it comes with especially from a reliable and trusted name. The 7200rpm speed means that you can use as a source drive got video editing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast, Quiet and looks cool! I use this drive to host my VMWARE virtual machines and the performance is great. I was so impressed, I bought another one. I also bought the G-Drive mini 1TB drive to host my Logic Pro music files. They are fast and they look cool :)
