Jobu Design BWG-J3K overview

  • 1Description

Photographers looking for a high performance tripod head in a very small package will be thrilled with the Jobu Jr.3 Gimbal Kit with Swing-Arm HM-J2 from Jobu Design. This head has a one-piece hollow heat-treated body making it extremely stiff. It is smaller, lighter, smoother and more compact than the earlier BWG-J2K head. Needle roller bearings allow smoother tilting under heavy loads and better adjustment of friction. Lockout force has been improved 200%, and overall durability has been improved in all aspects. The ideal travel companion, it has an overall profile of 9 x 8" (22.86 x 20.32cm) and easily fits into the small pockets of your existing bags. The head's quick-release clamp accepts most Arca-type compatible plates.

Recommended for long lenses such as:

70-200mm F2.8/F4, 100-400mm zoom, 150-400mm zoom, 300mm F2.8/F4, 400mm F5.6, 400mm DO, etc.

Recommended load for lens and camera: less than 10 lb (4.53 kg) total.
Maximum capacity up to 15 lb (6.80 kg) for occasional use.
Rubberized knobs for cold and wet weather usage.

    Jobu Design BWG-J3K reviews

    BWG-J3K Jobu Jr.3 Gimbal Kit with Swing-Arm HM-J2 is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gimbal for smaller tele lenses I am using this with a 70-400 f4-5.6 lens and it works absolutely beautifully (camera and lens weigh about 6 lbs). Panning is smooth, perfect for birds in flight photography. The whole set-up is lightweight but sturdy and the size of the gimbal fits this type of lens very well (I use it without the swing-arm, it's not really necessary). I often hike for quite a bit with my equipment and this gimbal weighs hardly more than my ballhead. The Jobu customer service is exceptional, I had a small issue with tightening one of the knobs and *helped me out and went above and beyond to help fix it. Great product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for 300mm Wildlife Photography I use this with 300mm f4 and f2.8 lenses. Its stable, compact for the safari bag, and easy to use. I prefer a swing arm rather than side attachment when mounting on safari vehicles, for greater safety of the camera and lens. It can be a little slow to attach and re-attach though, because of the screw in lens foot attachment. A lever release would be quicker but potentially less secure. I took one star off because the build quality is not as good compared to the Really Right Stuff monopod that I pair it with. However, this Jobu Junior Gimbal Kit is lower cost and good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why did I wait so long? New lens purchase finally convinced me to get a gimbal head. I'm not in the position to own big primes so this is a nice compact gimbal that's very well made that will cater to my usage for the foseeable future. Locking knobs are rubberized which gives good feel and lock tight. Good arca swiss style clamp which is my prefered quick release style. Motion is smooth an easily controlled, supports my sigma 150-500mm OS without any problems. Getting a lot more keepers than previous ballhead especially for wildlife shots where the action can change in an instant. My first Jobu Designs product, but wouldn't hesitate to buy other items from their product line. Does not come with lens plate so make sure you order at the same time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Long-Lens Platform for Fewer $ If you use a long telephoto lens with a tripod foot, this will improve your ability to get sharp photos. This is particularly true for wildlife and sports photography as well as for other situations involving moving objects. This unit is extremely well-made, smooth in operation, and steady if you choose to lock it down. The unit can be easily converted to a side-mount gimbal, if you need to save a little weight. I use it with a 70-200mm lens with a teleconverter attached. For really heavy telephotos, you might want to consider the more expensive Pro2 unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for 150-600 Sigma/Tamron Glad I found and bought this gimbal head instead of the Wimberly! It's smaller, lighter, and a more appropriate size for my camera/lens. Besides being a lot less expensive! The quality and construction is top notch. Very smooth motion. If you need a gimbal for the Sigma/Tamron 150-600, this is the one for you. Check out my photo. You'll need a 5 inch mounting plate to balance when extended to 600mm. I bought a 4 inch plate and will return it for a 5 incher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow, how did I work without it? I shoot a lot with heavy cameras and long lenses. Tripods are fine for fixed position shots but most of my work (sports and outdoor action), I'm constantly moving for the best composition, light, and distance. I use a hearty Benro monopod and have an L Arca-type plate on my all three of my cameras and a simple Arca receiver on my monopod. Previously, I'd tilt my monopod but it was a hassle. Now, I can pan in all dimensions smoothly with precision. The build is hearty; the knobs perfectly crafted and sized; and swing is smooth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth and Precise This head is perfect for my compact birding equipment (Panasonic GH4 w/Lumix 100-400 and tripod collar, Induro 213 tripod). Finding and framing distant objects is a breeze and the camera doesn't wander when locked down. I liked my Wimberley II but it was oversized for my needs and the Jobu Jr.3 seems like a perfect match in quality. I have used the Jobu with and without its swing arm and both configurations work equally well. I might leave the swing arm off to save a few ounces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight snd Strong! I mount a canon 5D mkII body with a 400 f5.6 telephoto on this Jobu Gimbal. Absolutely terrific. Smooth on both axis and a slight twist will lock it like it has been welded. This is a high quality product for a reasonable price. I got a 4.5 release plate for this lens/camera combo - the balance is perfect. This rig will hold up to 10 lbs - very strong for its weight.
