Key Features
  • DSLR Optical Viewfinder
  • Fits 3" LCD Screens
  • 2.5x Magnification
  • -4.75 Diopter Correction
Zacuto's Z-Finder Pro 2.5x optical viewfinder is a necessary tool for shooting sharp, stable video on DSLR cameras like the Canon 5D MkII, 7D, Nikon D90, D300s and others. Whether shooting handheld or on a tripod, the Z-Finder Pro turns your camera's 3" LCD screen into a clear, easy-to-focus viewfinder that lets you see your image in magnified detail even under the brightest sunlight. Just as crucially, the Z-Finder Pro provides an extra degree of handling comfort and a crucial point of contact--between camera and eye--that adds stability to any handheld video.

The Pro 2.5x version offers an adjustable diopter that enlarges the LCD image by a factor of 2.5, so you can see every detail for pinpoint focus. The diopter's extended range of -4.75 and up makes it especially useful for those who are nearsighted. The Z-Finder attaches to your camera via the included Gorilla Baseplate and mounting frame, which mount to the bottom of your camera using a standard 1/4"-20 screw. A non-stick rubber backing ensures a tight fit and prevents scratching of the LCD screen, so that the entire Z-Finder snaps off easily when not in use. Once detached, the unit can hang conveniently around your neck from the included lanyard.

Note:
For use with taller-bodied cameras such as the Canon 1D Mark IV and Nikon D3S, an optional Z-MFT mounting frame is required.
2.5x magnification
40mm diameter lens for excellent light throughput
Allows DSLR cameras to have correct form factor for video
Field of view perfectly matches 3" LCD screen size
Diopter range is -4.75 and up (unlimited with extender frames)--ideal for nearsighted shooters
Note:
The Z-finder is a magnifier and as such will magnify the sun and could damage the LCD screen if the sun is allowed to shine directly through the Z-finder lens. This is not a defect but a physical property. Caution should be taken to avoid sun magnification.

Poorly engineered product

The Z-finder has issues related to using it. It's primary function, to keep out stray light, and even to magnify the view screen are just fine. But if you can't put the thing together and take it apart when needed, it is quite worthless. The problem is with the extension rings. These are for near-or far-sighted folks who need the device to be a little farther away from the camera. By definition, we will be a bit older and a bit weaker than the 30 year old professional photographers who buy this. To adjust the plastic rings, you need to squeeze them in specific ways and pull them apart. When assembled on the camera, I couldn't squeeze hard enough to separate the rings. The instructions didn't help. I needed to devise a way which involved putting my hand inside the Z-finder. It took hours, busted knuckles and a lot of screaming. It should not be this way, and if you are not mechanically inclined, you may end up returning the thing. The other very annoying feature is a rubber flap that snaps shut over the eyepiece when you remove your eye. This is to ostensibly protect the camera from sunlight, but having to push this thing aside every time you want to look into the Z-finder is not only annoying, but creates a real risk of missing shots. And finally, if you are buying this for a Panasonic Lumix camera, make sure they send you the right one (not advertised). The standard one I received from B and H prevented the camera from being mounted on a tripod. I had to contact Zacuto for the proper Lumix-appropriate part.

Impossibly frustrating

The Z-Finder has clear glass and looks and feels like a quality product, but its flaws make it aggravating. I bought it to use for still photography with my Zeiss manual focus lenses, and once everything is in place and adjusted properly, it does its job making focusing of landscapes or micro work easier and more accurate than the camera's ground glass viewfinder. However, even after following the directions on the Zacuto video, the spacers are impossible to separate, without great force (more force than my arthritic hands can manage). I have broken tabs off of three spacers. Two more are in questionable shape after being forced. The adhesive mounting frames which are supposed to stick over the camera's screen did not stay stuck. If the plastic bits fit less aggressively, perhaps the glue would stick. The tabs used to attach the mounting frame are too short to be of use with my "tall" camera body, so that isn't a good option when the glue fails. The rubber bands work with a small camera, but are too short for the tall one. Finally, the focusing ring barely changes the diopter. It might as well not be there for all the good it does. I should have returned this device, but after one evening's struggle with it, it looks like it's ten years old. In my more than 50 years of photo work, I have not disliked a piece of equipment as much as I do this. I will use it to check the focus of shots I have already taken, but it's unlikely I will use it as intended. If I were willing to dedicate one camera body with the Z-Finder permanently affixed, then I'd have no complaints except for the inadequate diopter adjuster. I have never written a negative review before, but I am disappointed enough in this product to suggest that others not purchase it until there have been some changes made in the design. I realize that it is a delicate balance between fitting too tightly and not tightly enough. In this case there's ample room for improvement. It's a fine idea that is not executed as well as it should be considering the cost. If I do permanently mount it to my D800, it will be a fine gadget, but I am unwilling to tie up a camera in this way.

Great accessory for Pentax K-1

I have mounted the Zacuto Z-Finder on a Pentax K-1. The build quality of the Zacuto is first rate and the company seems to thrive on improving their product. The Z-Finder helps balance out long lenses, and viewing through a cushioned eyecup aids in keeping the camera stable.

Great magnification

Great magnification etc but the screws holding things down etc (the red ones in particular) are terrible quality....also you need to hold it down as falls off too easily but it has provisions for that so they covered their bases so to speak with that

I Like it but ..

Pros: magnifies well. easy to install. covers the camera's rear screen well. With the Z-Finder detached, leaving the extender frames permits camera rear screen viewing in sunny conditions as well, so my issue mentioned in cons became a positive. Middle: The focus ring hasnt provided me with the absolute fine focus I thought I would get. Cons: the extender frames are virtually impossible to remove once you have installed them. My extender frames appear to have a permanent home on the mounting frame ha ha.

A+ Image Quality and Construction

Mine is attached to a Nikon D810. I wear regular bifocals and use the distance portion for camera use. One spacer was required to achieve correct focus with my glasses. I determined this by hand holding the finder on the back of my Live View LCD screen. Spacers are a snap fit. Fit the spacers from the base unit toward the screen contacting bracket. This allows easier squeezing of the added spacer(s) to fit inside its mounting point. The metal brackets and machine screws are excellent quality. The look and feel is very similar to Really Right Stuff style brackets and hardware. For the initial fitting, place the camera face down on its lens and loosely install the Gorilla base plate. Loosely install the finder, spacers and mounting frame. Adjust as needed to cover the LCD screen and stay free of push buttons. Snug down the setscrews and thumb screws and test the fit. Once the fit is correct, apply Loctite Blue to the four adjustment screws. These adjustments do not change. Do this one at a time so the other tight screw holds the adjustment. The TTL viewfinder is not accessible when the Zacuto is in place. The rubber eye cup flap is a complete and total irritation in use. There is a cheesy rectangular mask inside the eyepiece. I was not able to get it aligned, and removed it. I am much happier with it completely out of the way so I can seen the LCD and surrounding area. At this price point, I am quite surprised Zacuto failed to include a D-Ring 1/4-20" screw for mounting the plate to the camera. This would eliminate the need for a large blade screwdriver. The Oben RPS-14D sold by B&H should work fine for this.

Will this fit the Sony RX 10 ll ? Thanks

While this will technically fit the RX10 II, it is not advised to use this product with the camera since it has an articulated screen.

Can you turn the viewfinder 90 degrees to use the camera in a portrait orientation for vertical video?
Asked by: Jonathan L.
Thanks Manzell. I meant to ask... if I do rotate the camera completely 90 degrees, will the rubber eye cup of the viewfinder that goes against your face also be able to rotate in a way that I can still use the viewfinder?

question

Is this compatible with the GH4? I can't find any information comparing this with https://<a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/970691-REG/zacuto_z_find_gh3_gh3_z_finder_pro.html target= _blank >www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/970691-REG/zacuto_z_find_gh3_gh3_z_finder_pro.html</a>
Asked by: James A.
You could use the Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2.5x with the GH4, though you would need to purchase a separate mounting plate. The Zacuto GH3/GH4 Z-Finder Pro Optical Viewfinder would already come with the mounting plate needed for the GH4. That would be the difference between the two.

question

Will this fit a Sony NEX 5?
Asked by: Anonymous
Unfortunately, Zacuto does not list the Sony Alpha NEX-5 Mirrorless Digital Camera on the compatibility chart. I cannot guarantee the Zacuto Z-Finder Pro 2.5x would be compatible with your camera. It is designed for 3 screens, so it would be the option I would recommend trying with your camera. If it does not work, we do have a 30-Day Return Policy so you could return the item for an exchange or refund.
