Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

This 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta from Sigma is a zoom lens for digital SLR cameras with a Sony/Minolta lens mount. The lens has a standard to ultra telephoto zoom range that is ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. The range translates into an equivalent 75-750mm when used with digital SLR cameras with an APS size chip. The lens is also compatible with full frame cameras. You can even increase your telephoto range by using the Sigma APO teleconverters.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO (Apochromatic) design, four elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range. A rear focus system insures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

Note: The filter size of this lens is 95mm and the lens is supplied with a step down ring enabling digital cameras with an APS-C size image sensor to use an 86mm filter.

Note: It is not possible to use a polarizing filter with the step down ring. If you attach a polarizing filter, you may not be able to remove it from the lens again.

Note: It is not possible to use the AF and the built-in OS function of this lens when attaching it to film SLR cameras

Note: If the camera body does not support the HSM motor, autofocus will not work

Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 75 to 750mm with most cameras.
The standard to ultra telephoto zoom range makes this perfect to carry when you only have room for one lens.
The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting a moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed autofocusing with full time manual focus override.
Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.

    Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Sony/Minolta is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pleased, so far! I am using this lens to shoot wildlife primarily. I have just begun using it, but so far, am quite pleased with the results. At 4.5 lbs, it does require getting used to. Have only handheld it so far, no tripod yet, but most of the images are very sharp. I have seen no signs of chromatic aberration. The autofocus motor is quiet quiet quiet. Very nice. Wish it had a larger maximum aperture at 500 mm, but as long as you're shooting in good light, 6.3 is not too bad. I have shot only birds to this point, and an extra 100-200 mm of focal length would be nice, as I have gotten a bit too close to some and scared them away, but that's how it goes. I am very pleased to this point, this seems to be a very good lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very versatile lens I mount this heavy lens on a Sony A77. This combination makes for a very versatile set up for nature/bird photography. The photo example I provided was shot hand held, lens image stabilization turned on, at 500 mm 30-40 feet away at 1000sec. I'll match any sharpness/resolution with any Canon or Nikon glass. This view is shared by other nature photographers in our local Audubon chapter. Ideally this lens camera combination is best used with a heavy tripod with a fluid head. Video clips using the tripod setup that I described produced excellent results. The only gripe I have is the auto focus produced some annoying clicks during the video as I panned the scenes. Manual focus is easy and I think an external microphone would help to reduce auto focus noise during video.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens This lens is great for wildlife photography. The ability to get up and close to your subject at the wide range of this lens is great, and being able to really reach out there on the telephoto end is great. It's a lens that you can keep on your camera and cover just about any situation. It's on the heavy side, but it's just so versatile, it's worth the weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Good Lens The images I've taken so far are excellent. Previous reviews referred to the weight of the lens, and this is very true. If your subject is stationary, it's best to use a tripod or at least brace the camera on a solid object to prevent camera shake. The lens has its own internal image stabilization system the directions say to turn off if your camera has an internal one. Otherwise they compete with each other. My first use was at an air show, and the pictures turned out very sharp. So much for a stationary subject.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great ,powerful zoom lens. I use it to capture long distance objects, which showed great capability in capturing fine details. The great thing about it is the clarity of the pictures. The lens has a great optical stabilization and a quick silent auto focus. The thing that aren't great it's a bit heavy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From Too Many Lenses to Just Right I cut the number of lenses I carried down to two plus a converter. Reduced bulk and weight considerably. Very happy with the results
