Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

This 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Canon EOS from Sigma is a zoom lens for digital SLR cameras with a Canon EF or EF-S lens mount. The lens has a standard to ultra telephoto zoom range that is ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. The range translates into an equivalent 75-750mm when used with digital SLR cameras with an APS size chip. The lens is also compatible with full frame cameras. You can even increase your telephoto range by using the Sigma APO teleconverters.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, four elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range. A rear focus system insures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

Note: If the camera body does not support the HSM motor, auto focus will not work.

Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 75 to 750mm with most cameras
Standard to ultra telephoto zoom range makes this the perfect to carry when you only have room for one lens.
The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting a moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.

    Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Canon EOS is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens I use this lens primarily for birding but love the 10x zoom for other uses as well. Pro's: Fast and accurate AF at all zoom distances. Optical Stabilization works well for lower light. Great minimum focus distance..can be used as sort of a macro lens as well. Con's: Only con I see is the weight...and that's not huge for me. I bought this lens to achieve AF at 500mm. I already own the Canon 100-400mm, the Canon 400 f/5.6 plus a Canon 1.4 T.C. to achieve 500mm. The Sigma performs superbly and I couldn't be happier with it. I would encourage anyone to give this lens a serious look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb children and wildlife lens Great lens for shooting children pictures. Saves a lot of movement. You can zoom in for close-up from long away. You also can zoom out to pick up as much context as you want, or for when the child comes towards your place. This lens saves lots or running around. Tried it at the zoo, and is great for picking up close shots from far away. Fast focus. Lens is fast enough for daytime, especially with the good quality high iso available on modern digital cameras. I have not tried it at night or in low light. Focus seems to be fast with a Canon 5D Mk III. It is heavy, but less than you might expect given the focal range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens - Great Price Wow is an understatement. This is the second 50-500mm Sigma lens I've purchased. I use the lens when shooting wildlife, specifically the kind that eats meat, and when shooting landscapes. The first didn't have image stabilization so was a little difficult to hand hold without a good tripod, but even it was a great lens. This one with stabilization is without doubt fantastic. Photos are clear and crisp. While a little heavy its a great lens to have in the field. Imaging starting at 50mm and being able to go all the way to 500mm telephoto in one lens. I wont be in the field without it. ...Overall great experience and great lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with this lens I do a lot of wildlife and nature photography and I am extremely pleased with this lens. Love the wide range of focal length from 50 to 500mm. I find the quality of the photos at all focal lengths to be very crisp and in focus. I had been using my canon 100-400 but am replacing that with this Sigma 50-500. It has quick focusing, the OS works great, and I like the turn mechanism for changing focal lengths much better than the push pull of the canon. All in all, a great lelns. It is heavy, but I generally use a tripod for most of my photos anyway. Hand holding has worked great also, with the OS system.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of a kind Its hard to compare this lens since there really isn't anything out there to compare it to. If you are looking for the same quality as a prime 500mm lens, then you will be disappointed, but for the price and the flexibility, there isn't anything better on the market. I would highly recommend this for anyone who wants a great deal of flexibility and a solid telephoto lens. For sample pictures and much more thorough reviews, just google search 50-500mm Sigma and you will find a great deal of information and comparison photos with other lenses. Overall, I love this thing! (Yes it is heavy, but look at the weight of most 500mm lenses and this is light in comparison.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great lens from Sigma So far I used it to shoot parade, wedding, surprise engagement, and football game. Image quality is about 95% of Canon's 100-400 L series lens. Unless you're shooting for National Geographic, it won't be obvious for your clients, but extra zoom on both ends will be. On my 7D image quality and sharpness are very good all the way through 400mm, and still good at 500. Focusing speed and accuracy is about the same as mentioned Canon. The only drawback: it is heavy, but so are 300, 400 and 500mm primes! I have no regrets of buying it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 50-500: Too Good To Be True? The Sigma 50-500 O/S lens worked with my Canon 5D beautifully. It was put to the test on a high speed motogp race. The ease of use with the slide zoom allowed for a wide range of opportunities. The 50-500 range allowed me to capture photo opportunities without switching lenses and carrying a tom of equipment. The O/S worked incredibly fast and produced numerous images in great detail. A wonderful addition to any photographer's inventory. The only negative comment: the O/S drains the battery rather quickly, so pack an extra battery. Samples of my images at @

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best buy for the buck There is no other lens with this range of 50-500mm, and also with OS/IS, hard to believe. However, here it is and it is done well (very well). As the only nonL canon lens in my bag, it has some rough competion. The only reason that I can tell it from canon is that it is not white and the price was reasonable. I strongly recomend this lens if this would fit your needs. Remember that it is a big heavy lens (hence the nickname Bigma)so if you are planning to carry this on an all day project, be sure to plan ahead. I could recomend the Sun-Sniper carry strap available from B&H (of course).
