Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

This 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon from Sigma is a zoom lens for digital SLR cameras with a Nikon lens mount. The lens has a standard to ultra telephoto zoom range that is ideal for nature, wildlife, or sports photography. The range translates into an equivalent 75-750mm when used with digital SLR cameras with an APS size chip. The lens is also compatible with full frame cameras. You can even increase you telephoto range by using the Sigma APO teleconverters.

The OS (Optical Stabilizer) system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3-4 stops faster. This allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions.

The use of the OS (Optical Stabilizer) system, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), APO apochromatic design, four elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass, and multicoated optics all enable this lens to provide a high level of performance throughout its entire zoom range. A rear focus system ensures quick, convenient manual focus and a non-rotating front barrel.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance, while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

Note: If the camera body does not support the HSM motor, auto focus will not work.

Designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-C size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 75 to 750mm with most cameras.
Standard to ultra telephoto zoom range makes this the perfect to carry when you only have room for one lens.
The OS system uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake. It automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting a moving subject such as motor sports.
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) system ensures quiet and high-speed auto focusing with full time manual focus override.
Four Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration.
The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations.
Super Multi Layer (SML) coating reduces ghost and flare.

    Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Nikon is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 105.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a GREAT LENS!!!!! I started to check this lens out before it had OS. Since Sigma added the OS function I have been researching it for more than a year reading everything I could find about it, the good, the bad and the ugly. Two weeks ago I ordered it for my Christmas present from my wife. I did not have time to work with it until the Baltimore Grand Prix. I shot over 1,500 pictures with this lens over a 4 day weekend. I love this lens!!! Works well with my Nikon D90 camera. It got a little heavy after about 6 to 8 hours of walking around the track and pit area, but I got shots that nobody else could get and I did not have to fight the crowds to get them!!! I would recommend this lens to everyone!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens, Great price. A lens with the range this one has shouldn't work this well. I bought this with the intentions of deploying to Afghanistan, being able to take all the pictures I want, and not needing to change lenses often, if at all. This lens does exactly that, giving me a range wide enough to take normal day to day pictures, as well as zooming in close enough to our helicopters to take pictures of the pilots inside of them. This lens really challenges the saying you get what you pay for in that you get a high quality, versatile telephoto lens, for much cheaper than you would expect to pay.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Low cost for wild life photography The new Sigma 50-500 F4.5-6.3 APO HSM DG OS zoom lens (F4.5 with OS via old F4 no OS) has a very reasonable optical performance (4.5/5) at affordable price, $ from B&H compare with Nikon's 200-400F4 at $7000.10X zoom range give more flexibility in the field from a small bird 25' to dragon-fly at 5' away.OS 1&2 works but shaky is a problem at long zoom. Better use a monopod or a tripod.Very heavy !!! 2kg/4lbs, Strong arm needed.Sometimes it can not find target. May need manual focus assistant. UV and polarize filter for 95mm lens may cost more than 10% of the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't judge this lens by its price This is a very versatile wildlife lens. I have used the 300 f/4 with a 1.4 tc and yes it worked great, but for my purposes it was not practical. Oftentimes, while in Yellowstone, I was too close to the subject for that focal length. However, the versatility of the 50-500 is unmatched. It is not the sharpest lens out there and it does require lots of light but keep it around f/8 and your pictures will come out great. Also, it has really nice bokeh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from extremely versatile i use this lens for field sports, (soccer, lacrosse) and wildlife shooting. It is, in my opinion, very sharp. focusing is fast and accurate. It is heavy enough that i use it exclusively on a monopod for sports. Because of my uses, the OS is helpful at times, but not absolutely necessary. the range is extremely useful. the only downside of the lens is that it zooms in the opposite direction of my nikon zooms. for the sigma, counterclockwise zooms out. it takes a few minutes to get used to it, but after that, i love this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Reach, Great Quality honestly i bought this lens for the reach, i planned to take it to airshows and shuttle launches, but when i took it to take pictures of the planes landing i was amazed by the quality, especially when the camera was mounted on a tripod. the reach is fantastic and the quality at the short end could easily be used for portrait work (if there was a tripod around and i was too lazy to change lenses), because the background blurs due to the focal length. i hope it will encourage me to carry my tripod more. the only cons i see are the heft of the lens (which is appropriate for the size), and the filter size (which is immense). neither is a big enough to rob it of a 5 rating great lens, though pricy, if you need the reach this is the go to lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Value I rented this lens to photograph birds while in Florida. My purpose was also to evaluate this particular lens for possible purchase. The photo image quality is great, and I did not have to carry a tripod. I recommend stopping down to f/8 at 400 and 500 mm to obtain the best sharpness. I have not tried BIF, but do not anticipate great focusing speed because of the small aperature. The lens needs good light and contrast for fast focus. Nice build quality and I like the newer smooth finish. The cost of this lens is a bargin compared to other 500mm lenses with VR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I see why its called the BIGMA I opened the box and I could see why it's called the BIGMA. At first I though did I make a mistake? After using it was very happy that I purchased this lense. I got it for shooting wildlife and sports. I have a Nikon D90. When I received the lense I first used it to shoot Photos of my grandson at football practice. I was impressed with the quality of the pictures and how easy it was to hand hold. I went on a cruise to Alaska I used this lense 80% of the time. My friends wanted to see and try it. One friend orderded one for her husband and when we all whent out bird shooting she desided to order another for herself. Another friend liked how close everthing was and orded one for herself. Fourteen of us our going to South Africa in September and so far we will have four Sigma 50-500 lenses. I am very please with this lense and looking forward to great shots in Africa.
