    Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 reviews

50-500mm F/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM Lens for Pentax K is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected I have been looking for a Sigma 50-500mm for a while as I experienced good results with an older Sigma 170-500 but wanted something that could go wider. The Bigma performs better than the older 170-500, it seems sharper at the long end and the resolution holds up to cropping well. Best results seem to be at f8-f11 when at 500mm. From my initial testing it is just as good at 500 as it is at lesser focal ranges. A slight bit of purple fringe can show up in high contrast areas but is easy to correct in post processing. The Sigma OS gives better results than my Pentax K-5 in body SR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I absolutely love this lens!!! It has opened up a whole new world for me to photograph. I now can get realitively good shots across the soccer pitch and get up close and personal with wild life that was never possible until now. I know this isn't a prime, and in heavily wooded areas you really need a tripod, but the BANG for the BUCK was tremendously worth it. Oh, this was my Christmas gift from my Fiance, so that even makes it better. We call it the Casie lens. I am still learning how to use it but hopefully by the end of March I'll be ready for the High Island Migration season here in Texas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT LENS I have wanted a long lens for wildlife for several years. I finally broke down and purchased the Sigma 50-500 for my Pentax K-7. It is big and heavy, but it is very clear at all lengths. Easy to use. I especially like the manual focus override. I am worried about dust and rain, so I will be getting it a rain/dust coat I have never owned a Sigma lens before. All of mine have been Pentax or Tamron. I am very impressed with the quality. This will not be my last Sigma lens. If you want a verstile, long range lens, this is the one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma Bigma absolutely awesome lens...i sat on the fence for a month before i got it and wish i had done it sooner..it takes wonderful pictures..focuses quickly..it is somewhat heavy as you would expect but not horrible...i am using it with my pentax k5 and with the aperature and shutter priority feature i have been able to take some amazing nature shots..if pentax offered other choices i might have gone a different route but i couldn't be more pleased with the quality and what you get for your $. Buy it...you won't be disappointed.....

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good results when used correctly This is not a lens that can be easily handheld or carried. It is a lens to be taken on excursions devoted to photographing subjects that are appropriate for the long reach of the lens. It is too heavy and bulky to carry in the field on extended hikes just in case you might find a use for it. It needs a sturdy tripod designed to handle the full weight of the lens/camera combination. The lens has a lock to address the lens creep problem. But the lock is poorly designed. To engage the lock I have to retract the lens all the way. But in that position, the lock will not engage. It is necessary to back the lens off ever so slightly before the lock will operate. Thus what should be a simple one handed action becomes a complex two-handed proposition. I contacted Sigma customer support; they told me that all the lenses work this way. In my mind this is a serious design defect. That said, the lens has given me some truly wonderful and amazing photos. Just don't expect great results on little far away birds when using it handheld.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens, the search is over. This is my third Sigma zoom lens. And this 50-500mm is a keeper! The prior lenses were 135-400mm and 120-400mm. The 50-500mm blows the others out of the water. The focus is much faster and a lot less searching. And the focus is correct with no in camera compensation (Pentax K-3). The images you take with this lens are impressive. Everyone else's examples of focus and image sharpness are true and factual. I do not do any post processing with the only exception of bringing out highlights in darker scenes (not a lens issue). This works fine for macro photos, although you are standing several feet from the subject. I shoot photos at 500mm hand held using rapid multi shots, cause they are not all going to be steady. I highly recommend this. Skip the others and save your money for this one. The build quality is great. The only negative is the weight of this lens, but I hand hold it for hours on end. I do use the lens strap for support when walking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 50-500 lens isa winner This lens has filled my need for a longer reach, it is so versatile. Going from 50mm to 500mm without having to change lenses is awesome. I have been using it to capture eagles in flight with excellent results. Focus is fast and quiet and you can easily zoom in or out to frame your shot. The only drawback is the weight, but then exercise is good for you. I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Zoom for Super Shots I was shopping for a versatile long range zoom lens when I stumbled onto Sigma's 50-500 lens. No one else offered a similar product and the price seemed alright. The lens took a little bit getting used to. it is on the heavy side so shooting free hand can be difficult. I use a monopod to overcome this problem. When stationary the monopod offers a solid platform to take amazing shots. I have since discovered that the collapsed monopod acts as a stabilizer when shooting moving targets such as birds in flight or aircraft. The lens focuses very quickly. The lens' sweet spot is between 200 and 300mm but the results outside this range are still very good and deliver very detailed photos. Given that when used with a C-sized frame camera the actual range is 75-750mm it is an extreme telephoto lens for a very reasonable price. The only thing I don't like about this lens is the lock. One has to retract the lens all the way for it to work. This is my workhorse lens which is always attached to my camera when I go shooting. As for my pro friends who didn't like the lens at first because it wasn't a name brand lens have since changed their tune.
