question
Can you use this tripod legs without the spreader? If so, is it much weaker?
Without the spreader there is no way for the legs to maintain their angle. The legs will slide outward and drop your camera to the ground.

question
Can you mount this tripod on a dolly? or is the spreader a requirement on this trip?
The ground spreader is not permanently attached. You can use either the 114MV or the 181B dollies with this tripod.
