Canon WA-H82 overview

  • 1Description

Canon's WA-H82 0.8x Wide Attachment Lens is designed to provide a wider angle of view for XF300 and XF305 pro camcorders, turning each camera's 29.3mm lens into a roomier 23.4mm (35mm equivalent). That means you can take in far more of a scene, especially indoors or in tight spaces.

    Canon WA-H82 reviews

WA-H82 0.8x Wide Attachment Lens is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid and a must Its a great piece of glass, solid and good quality. The camcorder looks far better with the wah82, the zoom becomes way short with this add but worth it. The petal hood is removable and it is just to put on and turn the screw, level it by eye. No threads on this piece for adding a screwing filter. No light loss perceived images are great and it becomes a little curved on the sides, but you got a wide. Even with a big batt in the XF it is now front heavy take in count that this attachment weights a little more than one pound. Shot and run is more challenging for the wrist. Comes with its two caps, hood and a bag. I believe it is a necessary accessory. There is a clip on Vimeo, check it out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WA-H82 Wide Angle Attach - A Must Have I have to admit that when I got my XF305 I was surprised at the confines of the stock 29mm equivalent lens. I have shot full frame sensor still cameras for years but really didn't give the bottom end of 29mm much thought when I ordered the camera. Thankfully the WA-H82 attachment saved me from myself. This attachment actually made the camera usable again in many situations. Yes, it is a serious piece of glass and heavy as one user noted. And they said it would not autofocus but it will in normal mode, just not in instant focus mode or with the push AF button. Each of those is a more than fair trade off for the field of view I pick up. Unless you shoot everything outdoors and never near your subject then I think this is a must have component for the camera. I don't think you will be disappointed with your investment. Don't forget to set the correct setting in the menu so the camera knows the attachment is on or it will not focus properly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from know what you are getting I bought this thinking that it would give me more flexibility with a wider angle than the camera gives you by itself. After putting it on, I decided to return it. It adds significant weight, especially to the front end of the camera, it limits your zoom capabilities, and auto focus is not available when it is on the camera. Looks to be a nice piece of glass, but not worth the trade offs, in my opinion. I am using the camera for doc projects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What the doc ordered! Get's just that little extra picture when you can't physically get further back. Works great for extra drama on crane and steadicam shots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than Expected! Love the Zoom range on the 300/305 didn't think we were going to feel shorted on the Wide side. You never know what you miss until it's gone? This is the case with the Wide Angle. Optics are far sharper than expected making the most of the sensors, shots are much more dramatic outdoors and interiors/indoor event work flat looks better. Minor loss of Face Recognition Focus Tracking was an initial concern but a more than fair tradeoff. Initially purchased as a best to have in the bag in case is now a start off with it mounted. Spendy? Stupid Expensive, but if you own this camera you bought it for very very specific reasons. This WA completes that package. Can't speak to the Century Optics version. At 350 vs 500+might be worth it, but BH had the Canon in stock (the Century was not) and Sharpness in the corners is good enough that I don't feel slighted by the extra dollars to stay OEM. NOTE: Wicked nose heavy, you will need to rebalance and re-mark your balance points on your jib/dolly/tripod head plates.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful clarity Works beautifully. The little extra angle is worth the money. The only neg is it does not have a thread to attach a UV. I am still puzzled as to why. It is not super expensive so I feel it is worth the gamble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Addtional Glass Though seriously a weighty addition, the wide angle is just right for the XF305. Actually, one knows this quality will be heavy :)
