Countryman DT10 overview

  • 1Description

The Type 10 Direct Box from Countryman is an active DI that tackles the difficult tradeoffs present when dealing with direct injection sources - ultra-low distortion can only be attained by increasing input noise, while true ground isolation means high phase deviation or signal attenuation.

Using an analog circuit that tunes itself, the Type 10 maintains exceptionally low THD and IMD specifications across the entire audio band, and for a wide range of input voltages, rendering the source sound with extremely high fidelity. The result is a clean, precise sound.

The Type 10 is armored inside and out, with a molded core wrapped in an extra thick architectural aluminum housing. The switches and connectors are fully recessed. The electronics can shrug off static spikes and will survive with the input connected directly to 110V or 220V line voltage.

Rock solid isolation designed to drive any board across hundreds of feet of cable whether or not phantom power is available
Internal electronics are molded into a solid epoxy block and protected against electrical damage
The outer casing is a single piece featuring extra thick walls
Handles sizzling hot outputs from active keyboards using the -15dB pad with virtually immeasurable distortion
Ground lift switch eliminates noise and buzz caused by faulty electrical wiring
Access the battery using the edge of a coin
Check the battery voltage and monitor the quality of the phantom power with the flip of a switch

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible active DI Box!! I've been more of a passive DI guy for many years. I did try MANY active boxes (those top end blue or green boxes, also one with a British branded name, etc.) ... I was always under the feeling that those active circuits were in a way or another modifying or distorting my tone, adding hiss, or sending too much output level for some preamp to work optimally, etc. The very first notes I've heard from my faithful P Bass through that Type 10 DI were a revelation!! Further tests revealed that this DI is an incredible piece of gear, and will work perfectly for many different applications. PROS: - The top end is bright and it breathes, not aggressive by any means, very open. - The mid range is forward, but in a very PRO way, not harsh. - The low end is super tight, not muddy at all. You’ll find more ‘character’ (mud) from a passive DI (if you’re more into that tone). The Type 10 sounds more accurate to me. - The high input impedance (10 Mohm without pad) won't load your passive instrument pickup and is also perfect for piezo pickups. - The Type 10 runs on phantom power (it doesn't require a lot of current 1.5mA only, which is nice with older console/preamp designs) OR from a 9v battery, which may become handy in some particular applications. - The connectors and switches are more recessed than what the pictures show. Everything is super solid safely located. - The momentary switch to check the power condition is a great idea. CONS: - The input impedance drops at 10Kohm on the -15 and -30 pad settings, which is a bit low. I would have appreciated an in between of 100 ~ 150Kohm at -15, which would be the equivalent of a good passive DI. That would have been useful for some applications. - The box is somewhat bulky (but VERY solid) and didn’t come with any kind of legs or protection underneath. I added a little slice of foam, but I think something should be included in the box. All in all, I will definitely buy 2-3 more Type 10 for my studio soon! Thanks Countryman!
