Shure SM57-LC Reviews

Real deal - Great drum mic

After getting burned by two other (less expensive) vendors who sold me counterfeit SM57 microphones, I decided to pay full price at B&H. I'm a drummer and I use these mics in my basement studio to record myself, to analyze my practice sessions and progress. In the 40 years I've been playing, I've never heard myself in such great quality. I use two SM57 mics as room mics, to record in stereo with a focusrite digital interface recording onto a computer. The SM57s work exceptionally well suspended from the ceiling or on stands 3ft away and pointed at either side of my drum kit. I'm getting zero clipping. A great drum mic for individual drums or as a room mic.

THE standard for Instrument Mics and a Great Bundle

SM57s are THE standard mic for instruments. Of course you can buy specialty mics that sound better on specific instruments. For general stage use, though, you just can't beat a 57. This bundle is a great value. For only $10 more than the mic alone you get a stand (seems decent, if not super sturdy) and a mic cable (too early to tell how long it'll last but seems fine so far).

For the price, get 10 or 12. Seriously, though... I bought my first one 50 years ago, it still works, and I just bought another one. And I'm sure it isn't the last one.

I use the SM57 for recording guitar amps, speakers in isolation cabinets and snare drums. Excellent construction and performance and Shure has kept the price at $99 for as long as I can remember. An excellent tool for recording.

Industry standard

I'm using SM57 for recording music or speech etc. in a small hall with setting mic stands in front of speakers. For a video shooter like me, audio quality is really important. In the case of live recording, getting a line signal from a PA mixer is ideal, however, sometimes it is better to stand SM57 in front of speakers, because the balance of signal and surrounding noise is awesome, so it can be heard more naturally than a PA line. SM57 and SM58 are the most reliable mics. I don't need to say so anymore. Of course, the audio quality is super clear and the metal body is so stable. The mic stand and cable including this bundle are also enough stable for this price.

question

I'm a comedian looking for the best recording device for audience laughter. I have equipment to record my voice, but whats the best device for capturing as much audience laughter as possible?
Asked by: Anonymous
I disagree that one should use an omni mic for picking up audience laughter. Most clubs and auditoriums have PA systems, and you want to focus on the audience while not picking up the PA system. Therefore, you need a directional microphone that you can point at the audience and away from the PA loudspeakers. The SM57 will work OK in this application. So will other directional microphones.

Does this mic need a direct box when connecting ...

Does this mic need a direct box when connecting to a mixer? The mixer is a Yamaha MG if that matters.
Asked by: David
No. Use a microphone input on the mixer and use the trim or gain control on the mixer to get good gain from the mic. Not to much and not too little! Just Right!

question

Can the SM 57 microphone plug directly into my Canon HF 100 HD video camera with a 1/8 (3.5MM) cable?
Asked by: Bob K.
The Shure SM57 can be connected to the 3.5mm input of a camera. For the best sound, it is recommended to use a combination of XLR cable, and specially designed XLR to 3.5mm adapter. The Kopul LMT100 will match the low impedance output of the mic to the high impedance input of the camera. http://bhpho.to/1yMIinD
