Shure SM57-LC Reviews

Exactly what I wanted and good value for the money

My main goal was another couple SM57's, and seeing this kit with another stand for cheap money was attractive. The SM57 is exactly what I was expecting, solid metal and not a knockoff. The mic stand and cable are much better than I was expecting for the extra $20. A solid thick 20' cable with Neutrik connectors. The boom stand is better than you'd expect and will be in my standard kit.

The pros: These things are durable as diamonds! You can throw these out the window, run them over with a car, drop them in a lake, cook them in a microwave (okay, actually, don't do that, you will blow something up). But there are actually videos of people doing these things and using the SM57 afterwards, look it up. These things are made of whatever Nokias are made of. You're saving so much money by getting this over an SM7B! It might not look as cool, but if that's what you care about, buy a nice pair of shades with the money you've got left over. Perfect for stage performance! Their low sensitivity, durability, low-end rolloff and pickup pattern makes SM57s perfect for using out in the world. If the President can use these, so can you. SM57s are versatile and can be used for just about anything. This is marketed as an instrument mic, but that's just because the SM58 has a grille. You're completely fine with just an SM57 (see: the President) Cons: - The foam filter is a pain to attach to the mic. Apparently it wasn't originally designed with this mic in mind, and it shows. You'll need to use some hard plastic sheet to funnel the mic in. - The arm is decent, but not the best I've ever used. - SM57s might be a bit dark for people (a bit low on trebles), but this is something a bit of EQ can fix just fine. - SM57s need a LOT of gain, though not as much as the notorious SM7B cloudlifter combo.

question

I'm a comedian looking for the best recording device for audience laughter. I have equipment to record my voice, but whats the best device for capturing as much audience laughter as possible?
Asked by: Anonymous
I disagree that one should use an omni mic for picking up audience laughter. Most clubs and auditoriums have PA systems, and you want to focus on the audience while not picking up the PA system. Therefore, you need a directional microphone that you can point at the audience and away from the PA loudspeakers. The SM57 will work OK in this application. So will other directional microphones.

Does this mic need a direct box when connecting ...

Does this mic need a direct box when connecting to a mixer? The mixer is a Yamaha MG if that matters.
Asked by: David
No. Use a microphone input on the mixer and use the trim or gain control on the mixer to get good gain from the mic. Not to much and not too little! Just Right!

question

Can the SM 57 microphone plug directly into my Canon HF 100 HD video camera with a 1/8 (3.5MM) cable?
Asked by: Bob K.
The Shure SM57 can be connected to the 3.5mm input of a camera. For the best sound, it is recommended to use a combination of XLR cable, and specially designed XLR to 3.5mm adapter. The Kopul LMT100 will match the low impedance output of the mic to the high impedance input of the camera. http://bhpho.to/1yMIinD
