A Workhorse for Center Stage
Classic, legendary, and in demand, the Shure SM58 remains one of the most identifiable vocal microphones, relied on by live engineers, houses of worship, and singers throughout the world. It's built to sound great and live long, thanks to tour-worthy ruggedness and sensible appointments including internal shock absorption, a built-in pop filter, and a capsule that keeps stage noise at bay. Day after day, the SM58 earns its reputation on big stages, in home studios, and everywhere in between.
That Familiar Sound
With a midrange bump and a natural bass roll-off, the SM58 delivers a tone that's tailored for vocal clarity. Bring the mic up close for a full, warm, and bass-rich presence, or pull it back to get a more natural sound with reduced low frequencies and minimal "s" sounds.

Point the SM58 toward your source and away from unwanted sound; its cardioid polar pattern rejects much of what's behind it, significantly lowering the amount of stage bleed, monitor mix, or background noise that gets picked up by the mic.

Leave Handling Noise Behind
A pneumatic shockmount system in the SM58 absorbs vibrations to keep your sound clean and free of handling noise. This lets presenters and singers confidently hold the mic while speaking and performing, knowing that their voice is coming through prominently.

Built into the SM58 is a pop filter, which helps control wind and breath noise without requiring an external pop screen. Of course, external windscreens are available should you choose to accessorize your SM58.

On the Road Again
Enamel-coated metal construction and a steel-mesh grille make the SM58 highly resistant to wear, abuse, and the challenging conditions of live events.
Tech Notes
  • Dynamic capsule needs no phantom power
  • Balanced XLR 3-pin output jack for connection to a stage box, mic preamp, mixer, or audio interface
  • Break-resistant microphone clip rotates 180 degrees to ensure easy positioning

Great mic and kit

This is my first ever microphone. I do youtube videos and plan on using this for podcasting as well. The mic itself is fantastic quality - both physically and in it's sound. Sometimes I use a pop filter / windscreen on it, sometimes I don't - it sounds great either way. I mostly use this with the stand clip and attach it to my boom arm, but it is nice to have the option to use the full size floor stand that comes in this kit also. The cable itself is long enough so I don't feel tied so closely to the equipment and I can position things differently without too much work. Definitely will consider this again when i need another mic.

Perfect for vocals, and close miking in general

I record professionally for audio, video, and increasingly for live-streaming. COVID restrictions have limited concerts to outdoors, and/or with social distancing and barricades. Thus I have found close miking almost essential. The SM58 mic is very good for vocals, and does well for winds and brass in a jazz ensemble. They're rugged enough for the vicissitudes of outdoor environments, and wiping down protocols where studio mics could be easily damaged. I bought sixteen to meet current needs, and will probably end up with 24-32 in my road kit.

Works great!

The mic and mic stand work great. I'm using the mic connected directly to a Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen and all is good.

Industry standard mic, a decent quality 20 foot cord and a stand which can be used with or without the boom. Without the boom the clip can be up to 67 inches above the floor, tall enough for a 6' 4 vocalist. The only plastic bits on the stand are the tripod base, everything else is metal, including the height adjustment nut which can crack if it's plastic.

Not very loud

The sound output from this device is very low, no adjustment on device, except to lower the mic by double. Very poor consider the cost.

question

will this work in recording acoustic guitar and perhaps mic-ing the amp?
Asked by: Pocholo E.
The SM58 is an excellent vocal mic, but it may not the best choice for recording acoustic guitar. The SM81 (B&H # SHSM81LC) is better suited for capturing the instrument's details because of its flat response. Another option is the Audio-Technica AT2020 (B&H # AUAT2020), which can be used for acoustic instruments as well as for vocals. For your amp, use Shure's SM57 (B&H # SHSM57LC), which provides a bright, clean sound that is ideal for recording guitar amplifiers, drums, vocals, and other instruments.

Looking for a Swiss Army knife mic I can use for narration in studio and field reporting as an audio reporter? Could this work well in the field?
Asked by: Nailah
The SM58-LC has been considered the "swiss army knife" or industry standard for pro audio since the 1970's and still very much today. Being a dynamic microphone, cardioid polar pattern, and having a frequency response thats perfect for vocals/voice over. It is easily considered a microphone that can do it all.

What do I need to connect this mic to my Apple Mac for GarageBand recording?

I use a focusrite scarlet 2i2 as the interface. It gives me 2 XLR inputs and better outputs for monitoring plus level/gain control.
