LEE Filters Big Stopper overview

  • 1Description

The LEE Filters 100 x 100mm Big Stopper 3.0 Neutral Density Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 10-stop reduction in exposure. This 3.0 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

This filter is constructed from a high quality optical glass for high definition and clarity. It is compatible with the 100mm Filter System, which is designed for use with most lenses and camera types. This filter measures 3.9 x 3.9" / 100 x 100mm.

3.0 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 10-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

    LEE Filters Big Stopper reviews

    100 x 100mm Big Stopper 3.0 Neutral Density Filter is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 182.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great filter While a pain to get hold of, this is a great filter. Order by phone with B&H to ensure you are in line. I use this to really slow shutter speeds down. Read the brief instructions, or go on line to Lee. The filter works as advertised. The filter is glass, and from a visual inspection with a hand loupe, I could not see any variation across it , or in my images. The foam light block works as advertised, however I would not use it in inclement weather as the foam could be compromised, not just spots on the glass. This is way better than a welders glass! It has a slight color cast; easily dealt with pre or post photo. Price - expensive.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ND? I accidently wrote a review on the 150mm page, but own this 100mm version. WARNING- even at 10,000 K this filter still makes a cool blue image! It's tolerable @ 10,000 K but still blue. For $140.00 I expected neutral density like the name implies, it's not neutral at all!! Lee should scrap this and start over., and send a refund for those of us that received a bluing filter. They may want to get in touch with Hoya or B&W and see how they do ND filters. That's my 2 cents, and $$! Look elsewhere if possible:)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a Big Stopper, color balances well Lots of people complain about the color shift, but it's really not something that can be perfectly controlled in the filter at this price point. There are some filters in the $-$ range for 77mm round glass that don't need as much correction. For my uses, spending less and then spending a couple seconds on correction is more sensible. YMMV.Attaching two pictures - an unfiltered, uncorrected, and a filtered uncorrected. B&H limits pictures to two... but I printed the unfiltered image and the corrected image and couldn't successfully tell them apart. The total correction effort was a single click on the 18% gray patch, no complex light/mid/dark correction work required.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best 10 stop available This is the best 10 stop filter available. I've tried both hitechs and a hoya threaded before this. The lee is the most neutral and having a panel means you can slide it out to compose then put it in just to shoot which makes things much easier. The gasket seals out reflections as well (block your viewfinder as well). It is a bit cool in terms of the WB but it's an easy fix in post. The early hitech was MUCH worse and the newer pro version is still not quite as good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great filter for daytime long exposure Liked the first one so much I got I bought another. I shoot timelapse on 2 Canon 5D Mark 3 cameras and I have gotten into a couple situations where I've needed 2 of the Big Stopper filters. Plus its nice to have a backup just incase. I find the filter very useful in doing long daytime exposures. Works great with rivers, waterfalls and the ocean. Plus if you want to turn people into blurs to make the city streets look kind of empty, it does that too. Only thing to expect that you might not want is a blue cast to the images. But that's pretty easy to correct in your editing software.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic Glass I finally managed to buy this glass with B&H's Notify When in Stock. The optical quality is excellent, but not perfect. There is a barely noticeable color cast, and a very small decrease in contrast wrt no filter. Neither are real issues (trust me, I am a pixel peeper!). What I didn't like is that the filter came with a rough padded pouch. It looks like it can easily scratch the glass. Lee sells a soft velvet pouch separately for $5. Never in stock of course... I had to sew my own envelope for this, and muttered a lot of curses while doing so, hence the knocked off star.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this filter I am having a great time experimenting with this filter. It gives a very slight color cast, but nothing that cannot be easily corrected, and with some shots I didn't see the need for correction at all. Note, I have not used any other neutral density filters this dark, so no basis for comparison. It takes some trial and error with the timing, but that is to be expected. I love the ethereal quality of water and sky which is created by the use of it. If you are looking to add some fascination to your shots, I would highly recommend it. Well worth the wait and cost! I use it with a LEE filter holder, and it fits snugly and the foam blocks out all the light around the filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product So far I have used this filter coupled with: -100mm Aluminum Modular Filter Holder by Hitech -Adapter Ring for 4x4 Filter Holder - 77mm - for Wide Angle Lenses by Hitech This was a cheaper option to the LEE filter holder. The widest I have shot is a 14mm on apsc(21mm on FF)and there is no vignetting with this combo. I have not noticed any white balance issue. It's not a definite 10-stop filter, but my version was about 11 stops. I use PhotoPills to calculate the exposure. One thing I don't like was the price, although this goes to a good company, its a little spendy. I understand there is a limited quantity, but I am grateful for this product. Thanks Lee!
