Shure A81WS Reviews

57 windscreen interesting

Overall, this windscreen (A81WS) is something good to try if you have a bunch of 57 mics and want a different sound. Surely won't go overboard and say it's a SM7 now, nevertheless it has a really cool sound for vocals and miking guitar amps. Like I said, it's worth trying if you have a handful of 57 and desire a different sound. Most importantly , please make a plastic collar to wrap around mic so it slides in this windscreen and then you can easily remove the plastic by sliding it down once mic is in place in sleeve. Overall, happy I bought It and will definitely use it to smooth out some loud / harsh vocals. Does exactly what I hoped.

How to save $100 or more

With an SM57 and you have a decent alt for the SM7B at half the price.

I love it so much, I will forgive the awful fit.

Well, I was warned. I knew full well this thing wasnt going to be a good fit for my SM57. The opening is way too snug, and pulling it apart enough puts the fear of god into you, worrying youll tear it. That would be a nightmare in the case of a 35$ piece of foam. Once its finally on, it looks ridiculous, because it practically eats the entire length of the mic. (At this point, I feel like I deserve a round of applause for all the filthy jokes Ive managed to avoid.) But then you get close and - oh Nelly. No pops, no sibilance, no mud, just pure clarity. This thing is sheer gold for voice overs and even the most aggressive vocal work. In many ways, it makes the difference between an SM57 and an SM7B negligible.

Just foam? Yes, but...

Okay, so it's just a foam windscreen, and probably shouldn't cost $35. But it works. It REALLY works. It took my Pyle PDMIC78 and makes it sound like a million bucks, because the talent can really eat the mic without and pops. Make the proximity effect work for me. And, yeah, I've tried other foam windscreens and they don't do the job with this mic.

When applied to an SM81 the sonic footprint is transformed.

This product turns a SDC into a high end Dynamic. Think SM7. The price is right and exudes high end studio/military grade quality. A superb choice for film applications. Negates pop screen budget requirements.

Not quite a softee

At a third of the price of a Rycote softee this is almost as good for moderate wind protection. Have used on schoeps cmc/mk mic's for years. It is sonically transparent and protects mic from physical shock, light rain and wind. much cheaper than the schoeps teardrop foam filter. kind of obstreperous for tight interiors but otherwise solid all purpose windscreen.

Does the job. No complaints. Completely eliminates plosives. Highly recommended.

Cuts SM81 wind noise well

This works well in cutting wind noise on the Shure SM81. It's bulky and if the visual aspect is of concern, you might want to think twice or try to find another solution. But aurally, it's excellent. No complaints here.
