    Cascade Microphones 980-G-A reviews

FAT HEAD Ribbon Microphones (Brown Body and Gold Grill, Stock Transformer, Pair) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable value These mics did not astound me. They did not turn my $250 Epiphone acoustic into a $2500 Gibson J45. I did not sound like Frank Sinatra. They did not improve my gas mileage. BUT; they sounded awesome. These are not the Ferrari or Mercedes of the mic world; these are WORKHORSES. They sound rich, thick, syrupy and smooth while sounding clear and articulate. They ROCK on guitar cabs and sound fantastic in blumlein for singer/songwriter in-the-room sound. If you want a $4000 mic that gets used once in a while, this ain't it. If you want a great value on a pair of mics that you'll use on every single session, these babies are it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Microphones for an awesome price! I bought these mics for my semi-professional studio about a month ago. In that time i have used them on vocals, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar. They make mellow vocals warm and sultry while acoustic guitars shine. However if your recording a loud singer or heavy vocals I'd suggest something else. What first attracted me to these mics was the price. two ribbon microphones for such a low price? They must be junk. But after doing several weeks of research and talking to people that had them I decided to make the purchase. I'm so glad I did! The only downside to these mics is that they are ribbons and the user must be careful in handling them so as not to damage the coils. So avoid plosives when doing vocal takes, this is where pop-filters come in handy. Cascade Mics definitely stepped up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing quality and sound! I bought these because I needed some nice ribbon mics and I wanted to try out the MS/mid-side miking technique. The first thing about these mics is that they're seriously heavy and to me that speaks a little of the quality. They look great too. The sound was amazingly loud for a ribbon mic. Most ribbon mics have low input but I had to turn the gain down from where I normally have them. The MS setup was incredible for the stereo image and I can't imagine recording my hammered dulcimer any other way. I don't think you can go wrong with these mics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding pair of ribbon mics I had the good luck of a bandmate that owned a pair of these, so I was able to try them out in different settings before recently purchasing a pair of my own. They tend to be a bit 'dark' for my preference on guitar cabs, vocals, etc. But are worth their weight in gold for drum overheads. I've always found condensers for drum overheads to be overly harsh, but these Fatheads are some of the most transparent mics I've found for drums- the drum sounds like the drum (or cymbal...), period, leaving you endless options for processing after the fact.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A true ribbon sound... The ribbon mic has had a real strong comeback over the years from when I started recording on a vintage RCA (1940's RCA). I feel the sonic finger print is even more needed as digital becomes to clean. I do find the lower output not a problem with good pre's. I use these on cymbals because of the sizzle type sound that sometimes can be produced by my condenser overheads. I have used other brands and all mics have there place. A good thing to remember is placement. The bar is an added bonus as I will use that with other matched mic sets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Instant fan I use these mics to record video narration and various musical instruments. My setup is to run them through Mackie VLZ1202 mixer, and then feed PC sound card to record with Cubase. The mics are sold in aluminum case, which is very convenient. The look and feel of these microphones is outstanding. When I plugged them up for the first time and heard them in my Denon AH-D600 head phones, I couldn't believe my ears. I gotta say, I own AudioTechnica AT4033 mic, which is very good too, but these sound a whole lot warmer and overall nicer. I can't believe I didn't buy Cascade a lot sooner. Things that are great about these mics is their warm and natural sound. What's not so great is their whimsical nature being ribbon: you must store them in vertical position only, can't transport in luggage when flying or driving since the box must ensure the mics are always in the upright position. Ribbon mics are very fragile and you can't use them outside because they are too sensitive to the air movement. Additionally, they require a lot of preamp gain. You have to have a preamp. What's more, they are 8-figure, which means you pick up whatever is behind the mic, even if you don't want it. This by itself can be a blessing for making highly accurate stereo effect (MS setup, Blumlien, etc), and can be a curse. But regardless of all these cons, the sound in studio setup makes up for all the draw backs. I love these mics, and I will never give them up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! These mics are absolutely the best hands down. If you're looking for good sound for your guitars or even some extra mics for vocals, I find them to be the best ribbons for the price. I compare them close to a set of ribbons I got about a year ago for 3400$. I should have gotten these a few years ago instead as they are way more affordable and pick up the lows and highs better than any mic around, more so, for something within 1,500$ of their price range. Pick them up, you won't be disappointed with Cascade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great smooth deep sound! We're using the Fat Head Mics to record an indipendent full lenght. Especially on guitars, they're great!Very nice sound, deep, a little dark, very smooth and warm. As a room mic, it sounds nice too. For the voice, it's particular and interesting, but not for everyone. I think on the guitars, clean and with overdrive and/or distortion, it's the best use. However, for the price you can buy them they are an absolute steal! Don't miss if you like warm sound in a variety of possible situations
