Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM is an ultra-wide zoom that has a 35mm equivalent angle of view of a 12-24mm lens when used on DSLRs with APS-C size image sensors. This lens is constructed with 15 elements in 11 groups which help deliver incredibly sharp image captures. Sigma's FLD glass elements, equal to fluorite glass, correct for color aberrations and aid in delivering beautiful high contrast images.

The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4" (24cm) allowing you to emphasize the subject by creating exaggerated perspectives. It features a compact construction with an overall length of 4.2" (105.7mm) and a maximum diameter of 3.0" (75mm).

This 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 super wide angle zoom is perfect for shooting landscape photography, architecture, building interiors, photojournalism, wedding photography, group pictures and a wide variety of other shooting opportunities you may encounter.

Note: Due to the curved shape of the front element, filters cannot be attached to this lens.

Note: Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

This is a DC series lens designed exclusively for use with Nikon DSLRs with APS-C size sensors.
The lens features FLD glass elements with performance equal to fluorite glass to compensate for color aberration.
The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting while superior peripheral brightness ensures high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range.
One hybrid aspherical lens and two glass mold elements give excellent correction for distortion and astigmatism.
It produces images with exaggerated perspective with its wide angle view.
The HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus capabilities.

    Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 reviews

8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Pentax Digital SLR is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome lens for landscape! This is lens is at it's sharpest at 8mm with a bith a softness in the extreme corner, mostly due to the effect a lens this wide have on the perspective.Stopping down decrease sharpness in the middle boost it in the corners. At f8 everything is mostly equal in terms of sharpness. There is some distortion a 8mm but it's easily correctable in lightroom . When zooming a little the distortion disapear. You can't use a filter with this lens because of the bulb like front element but the built in lens hood kind of protects it. You need to be careful so that you don't take your feet in the picture (yeah it's that wide).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Widely Excellent The lens comes up to an equivalent of 12-24 mm (full frame) on Pentax Cameras, which fit exactly what I needed. It's been great using it so far - Good for landscapes, wedding imagery, architecture and interiors, but if you're indoors it's better to use a tripod rather than push the ISO. Also pretty good for group shots on the less-wide side, as people have been complaining they appear too small when it's set too wide. That's something to think about, as the lens isn't like a fisheye - Instead of bloating up, subjects become longer and smaller towards the middle. Which brings me to... Distortion: People/Objects appear extremely fat or distorted on the edges. It's not generally a problem if you understand your gear. Only obvious at the wider end. All in all, a very well made lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp lens. Fun. 8mm is addictive 8mm is addictive. Fun to use. Very sharp. Great colors. Need to learn how to use the perspective but it is amazing to say the least. First non Pentax lens I really like. The quality is quite stellar as well. Cons: Cannot use filters. I have used the Pentax DA 12-24mm as well but after I got this Sigma I let go of it. I take pictures outdoors so the constant f4 did not really matter to me as much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Zoomy from Sigma This is best zoom ultra wide lens for crop sensor. Easy focusing in AF and Manual modes. Looks great also. Performance better than any Pentax zoom lens. Must have good flash to use it indoor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sigma 8-16 Review Pentax K-mount This lens is an excellent UWA lens. Terrific FOV and very good overall sharpness.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from THE UWA lens to have I have a Sigma 10-20 since moving to DSLR. I like the ultra wide angle to give me exaggerated perspective. When the Sigma 8-16 was announced, I have been eyeing it but thought the extreme focal length would make it difficult to optimize the optics. However, every review I read suggests that it has stellar IQ. The bubble fish eye front element may be the reason. Bought this lens just last week. Based on careful but not chart based comparison with the Sigma 10-20, I can confirm that the 8-16 is better. Edge sharpness is significantly better at overlapping focal lengths and aperture values. Contrast is also visibly better. I have no difficulty in using the 8mm FL but it is indeed wide; you will be overwhelm by the FOV if you are not familiar with ultra wide angle. I am very happy with this purchase since it expands an area that I have a big interest. Now onto the not so great items. The most obvious is the front element. It is like the eye of a bubble fish. The lens hood kind of protects it, but it is something I have to be very careful. Next is the inability to use filters because of the front element. Then the slow max aperture. The Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 is already slow, the 8-16 is even slower. While I like wide angle, I don't like fish eye. So it is the only 8mm ultra wide angle in the market for K mount cameras. I have 6 Pentax lenses, 6 Sigmas and 2 Tamrons. So I am not exactly brand loyal but rather I pick lenses based on IQ and value. I highly recommend this lens ... until the next one comes along.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The ultrawide for APS-C If you like ultrawides and know how to use them this is a great addition to your lens bag. Nothing wider exist for APS-C. Light falloff is just as expected for such a wide lens. Sharp, some barrel distortion under 12mm and some pincushion above 12mm. Great size but that is also expected for APS-C only lenses.
