Focal Press 9780240810881 overview

Video Shooter - It's hard enough telling a story in words - and with a video camera there are other elements to deal with - time, space compression as well as others. This book takes a different approach to video instruction. Although geared towards the mid-level P2, XDCAM, and AVCHD camcorder, you'll still find lots of insight and guidance within its pages.

From an in-depth study of HD technology to an understanding of camera and lens choice, you'll learn the fundamentals - and then some - about camera placement, point-of-view, focal length and how the "triangle" plays an integral part in composition.

The author brings a certain humor as well as experience to these pages. Through anecdotes and tutorials, he shows you how to get the most from your camera.

About the Author: Barry Braverman is a veteran director of photography with over twenty years of experience including work on National Geographic specials, network television programs, national commercials, and music videos. The director of DVD training at Video Symphony in Burbank and a contributing editor to Video Systems magazine, he lives in Hollywood, CA.

Book: Video Shooter by Barry Braverman is rated 1.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Outdated, lots of attitude, few tips Obviously an experienced, talented shooter. Less so with the writing. There's a lot of attitude in here, and if you want turn into this guy -- a big budget shooter who lives in California, then maybe read this book. Lots of unhelpful specifics that only pertain to him -- how many readers are honestly going to be able to salvage gels from local Dumpsters? Gear recommendations date quickly, so the chapter spent on recommended cameras is of little use. And there's lots of space wasted on learning vocabulary that doesn't necessarily make your footage better. I mean, who cares if film sets old-timers call extension cords stingers? Do we really need to learn a hand-signal that means go get me the baby legs? The supplementary DVD seems to have been added for padding. His explanation of codecs and how they work, however, was very clear. Still I'm sorry to say I tossed this book after I read it.
