VL437 4.0x High Power Telephoto Lens (37mm Thread, Silver) is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a true 4x My test camera was a Sony HDR-XR160 (30x optical).I'll start with the good news: this lens gives pretty good picture quality. Comparable to my (nice) Sony VCL-HG1737C 1.7x teleconverter, IMO. No obvious focus problems or distortion or color tearing like the Raynox 7700es (which is supposedly a high-quality lens; it's certainly expensive). No focusing delays or other issues that I found, picture was sharp and responsive.Like all small teleconversion lenses, you need a reasonably well-lit subject. No night shots. Needs slightly more light than the Sony lens. However, I was not impressed by the shoddy assembly quality. I bought 2 of these lenses because the first one rattled and had scuffs and dirt INSIDE the lens. If I was keeping the lenses, I would be taking them apart to clean the elements. The second lens rattled even worse, due to one of the retainer rings being cross-threaded at the time of assembly, making it incapable of holding the elements in place.Vignetting is more pronounced on this lens than most other teleconverters, due to the tiny aperture on the camera end. You can't zoom out very far at all (<20% of max) before the vignette tunnel closes in. So basically you have a fixed-zoom camera when using this lens. This lens is NOT a 4x like it claims. Actual magnification is about 1.9x on both of my lenses (1.89x on one, 1.92x on the other).I'm giving this lens an extra star because the image quality is good. However, because of the false zoom claim, poor quality control, and the lack of zoom range, I am docking it 3 stars and returning both lenses.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does work, but aperture is really small Maybe I just need more experience with lenses, but to a newcomer the lens description on this product is deceptive. Yes, the thread is 37mm; however, the actual aperture for the lens is only 9mm. You can't even use this lens with a Flip camcorder because the Flip can't zoom in enough to get rid of the vignette. I have a much cheaper 37mm 2x telephoto lens that has a 32mm aperture. Additionally, to use this on camcorders like the Panasonic HDC-SDT750, the camcorder has to be zoomed in all the way. No option. I wanted this lens to be an augmentation to the existing zoom, but I didn't expect to be required to zoom in all of the way. The small aperture makes it an all or nothing deal. The 2x telephoto lens with its much larger aperture only requires minimum of 5 or 6x to remove the vignette. That said, the SDT750 still focused well, although it took a bit longer than usual, and the zoom quality appeared to be really good with no distortion that I could see, but limiting me to a single, extreme zoom dramatically limits its practical usability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for the price I work as a Private Investigator @ B&H assisted is selecting the right equipment for the job. This unit allows me to be a 1/2 + mile away with a sony camcorder w/a 68 opticalzoom now increased to 272 optical zoom w/ 8,000 didigital zoom!!! But you MUST use a tripod even egine vibration from the car will giggle the video.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Neat For the price this little gem is hard to beat. Cheap, but works well in daylight. I adapted mine to mount onto an ION free camera, and it works great to get close shot once I figured out the focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VL437 Telephoto Lens This lens is a very nice addition to my Sony HDR-CX580 video camera. Coupled with an additional Sony wide angle lens gives this small camera great versatility. The compression of depth of field the telephoto lens allows creates nice effects with certain scenes, as well as captures events out of range of the standard lens. If you like the range of effects and options a telephoto lens allows, this lens is an excellent choice. P.S. You may need an adaptor to mount the lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 4x Power I shoot a lot of animals in the back yard, and I can get some nice close ups now without disturbing natural behavior. Vignetting occurs at the extreme zoom and of course stabilization is desirable at longer distances. I like it for both function, price and's well made.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It arrived promply on time, but it is garbage does not work! It screws onto cam nicely but obstructs the view looks like you are looking through a pipe, if you zoom all the way up to maximum you will get a pic but not 4x, junk is what it is!!!
