Singh-Ray 82mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter
Key Features
  • Controls Up to 8 Stops of Light
  • Good for Blurring Motion
  • Holds Optical Quality at All Settings
  • Fast and Easy to Use
The Singh-Ray 82mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter - This neutral density filter gives you the capability to use fast film in bright sunlight. ND filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

When used with a digital camera, you can effectively see how this filter works. After the initial exposure, you can check your LCD image and then make whatever change in exposure you feel you need to enhance your image. By rotating the ring, you can either increase or decrease the ND effect. This will be especially useful when trying to achieve "blurred" or "panned" shots.

The filter contains "index" points to help you mark your spot. They do not represent actual ND settings , i.e. non-calibrated - but are there to help you re-set your filter when you wish to recreate the effect.

Note:
Singh-Ray cannot predict when vignetting may occur - especially with very wide angle lenses. To avoid vignetting, adjust your focal length, position, and/or composition to remove the vignetting - use your digital camera's display for reference.
Front ring can accept a Mor-Slo 5-stop Solid ND Filter or a Cokin holder for ND Grad Filters
Note:
To stack Mor-Slo with Vari-ND, at least one filter has to be standard mount with front threads - two thin-mount filters will not stack
Front Min/Max density ring lets you adjust density from 2-2/3 to 8 f/stops
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Neutral Density Factors
ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops)

Singh-Ray R-87 Reviews

High quality glass

I purchased the Singh-Ray variable ND filter primarily for video projects with my DSLR. Due to the Quality of the glass however it is a more than capable filter for landscape/waterscape images as well. The six stops of exposure control make it versatile enough to conquer any mid day shooting challenge.

Great Accessory

I have used the 77 mm version of the Singh-Ray VND filter for years on my Nikkor 77 mm lenses for low shutter speed photography of waterfalls and for DSLR video using low f-stops at 1/50 shutter speed for increased DOF. I pre-ordered the new Nikkor 24-77 mm f2.8E ED VR. I needed a whole new set of filters for the 82 mm diameter of this lens.

Great! (but expansive)

The quality of the Singh ray Vari ND is great. But I suppose there may be good quality filter a bit less expansive.

Easy and Versatile ND Filter

I used the 82mm Vari-ND Filter for waterfall day shots. I read all the reviews prior to purchasing it so understood what I was purchasing. It was easy to use and I relied less on the ND indicators and more on the time of exposure I was seeking when looking for longer exposures (by rotating the filter) - very nice to have one filter to use in a variable capacity vs changing filters constantly particularly when you are in a stream trying to shoot a waterfall. I read about the vignetting - I used it on a Canon L-seris 16-35mm lens and noticed vignetting at about 24mm. I don't think this is a problem if you plan your shot ahead and frame it to account for this. As far as the price goes - Read the reviews and make your choice - I believe it is worth the price. Attached is a 24mm HDR shot that shows nice blur and slight vignetting.

Singh-Ray ND Filter Rocks

I have used this product now for two weeks. It is first rate quality. The build is heavy but not noticeable. Have used on both my 24-70 and 70-200, and it is super sharp with no issues at any zoom range. I would highly recommend it for anyone with an expensive setup already.

My first experience shooting with a filter

I heard about this filter when I took a photography class in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, from Matt Suess. I am new to using filters and have only had mine a few days. At this point, I have only had one chance to go out and experiment. That being said, the photos that I shot on the one day produced good results in the clouds, but was a little under exposed, which is my fault due to lack of experience, so I am looking forward to learning how shoot with a filter. I also like that this one filter has up to 8 stops, and can have a Lee filter fit onto it.
