B+W 66-1069184 overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 40.5mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-Resistant Coating offers both protection to the glass and helps to improve light transmission and image quality.
Constructed from high quality Schott glass for optical clarity.
Brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.

40.5mm Circular Polarizer MRC Filter is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money. I had originally bought a less-expensive polarizer for my Nikon V1 but after using this one realized multicoating really does make a difference in a polarizer. It's well-made and produces excellent images. I would have preferred a slightly thinner frame, but not a big deal, since it doesn't vignette even with my 10-30mm lens at widest setting. B&W has become my filter company of choice due to the quality of its products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful for light metering I bought this to use with my Sekonic L-758 light meter (fitted with the optional hood). There are times when I use a polarizer to cut haze and to play with the light in the scene. I could use a filter factor when using the meter in these circumstances but that doesn't allow me to explore the effects of polarization on various parts of the scene. This does. This particular polarizer is very well built and, because of it's size, compact :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from B+W are the only filters that I use. Good glass requires good filters and B+W are the only brand of filters that I use on my lenses. One thing that I really like about them is that they are easy to clean should they get smudged or dirty out in the field. B+W are quality filters at a good price point. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I will definitely buy additional B+W filters I used this filter on a recent seascape outing and it made all the difference in the quality and brilliance of the images. First rate and necessary accessory for capturing the essence of was crashing on the waves on the beach at sunrise.
